Title: Anything to know about this rack?
Post by: Vsekvsek on April 12, 2013, 07:29:17 PM
Any downsides to this rack other than only fitting givi topcase? I am clueless on racks but wanted this exact style for my 89.

I have one and it works great... I have a cheap JC Whitney top box and with very slight modification fits great. You can grind the tap off in the rear and bolt anything you want to it. The top plates are around 25 - 40 bucks...        GIVI/Kappa part number f297 I think. They are hard to find here in the states. I bought mine from the same dealer.  For some reason they can't get them here in the US. Canada must have a different "pipe line" they are available in the UK also.

Finally got around and bought this rack. I am confused. Instructions just show two metal tabs coming down from side of bike to bolt rack into. Um ...only one I see is the one metal tab for the blinker. What am I missing?

Heres a link to the instructions provided. Theres no place to bolt those things on, or am i missing something entirely?

What you're missing is a good solid place to hang the racks from. :-/
Givi (and others) do use that blinker mount point through the rear fender and the thin sheet metal tab from the subframe.
If you can find or make some P clamps over the subframe tubes, you'll have much more secure support.

Hmm ok thanks, anyone out there have pictures of thier mounted ones? Just curious. Also i assume the blinkers disconnect easily to do this or do i need to pick up some more wire soldering supplies at hardware store?

Mine just happens to apart at the moment. These are the mounting points. It is plenty strong. Had a crash, destroyed the box, tweeked the rear sub frame but the rack came out 100% :good2: :good2:

Got her on and looks great, thanks all for help. Now anyone want to recommend a place that has decent prices for monolock trunks?

The large one is a Givi knockoff, and with minor modification, will fit the Givi plate.

I've been using one for a few years now.  It's nice, and cheap, but it's not a Givi.

The large jcw box is what I had and it worked just fine. Not high quality but for less than 40.00 it is just fine. Upon impact with asphalt it desegregated but even a GIVI would had broken up so for 40 bucks I felt better for what that's worth ! I painted the orange plastic, black and removed the Iron Cross emblem and purchased a Yamaha stick on emblem off e bay. I had to do some sanding / filing on the rack ears to get the box to engage better. It was easy.
Saddleman also makes an inexpensive box that might work.

Another local FJ rider with the same rack just ground off the nubs and bolted a scooter box on and it looks good. The top plates are pretty cheap to replace if you wanted a different one.

Or you could just bolt the JCW plate to the Givi rack, and save the Givi plate...   :unknown:

I don't know if this top box will fit on the GIVI mono lock rack. It is externally an exact replica of the GIVI E470 mono lock top box. I have this on my FJ, mounted on my Hepco & Becker rack using the universal mount plate that is included. It may fit the GIVI mount without any modification. I can fit 2 full face helmets inside.

Here is a GIVI E470 for sale that you can use for a comparison of the 2 boxes.

Yes mine came glossy black on the top cover. I have since painted it silver, and added LED lights in the center and on the sides.
