Title: Sticky Helmet!
Post by: nurse on April 07, 2013, 02:21:53 PM
I'm looking at a bit of a communication/say nav related mod.  But my question isn't about that.  It relates to using glues, adhesives and generally sticking anything to a lid.  I remember distinctly a campaign a number of years ago telling bikers not to put stickers or glues onto their helmet because of chemical interactions compromising the structure, strength and safety of your helmet.

Does anyone know if this is still the case?  How do modern coms units stick, I thought they used adhesive pads to attach to the side of you lid?

Anyone got any recommendations they know to safe. I was thinking gorilla glue.

adhesive pads wont hurt your helmet.   i have used the 3m double sided stuff and sticky back industrial velcro with no problems.

Just use a alchohol prep pad to clean the mounting surface first.

I have never heard about not putting stickers on your helmet, by most US States. The DOT/SNELL sticker needs to be exposed. The only warning I have ever heard is, not to spray paint a helmet as the solvents may interact with the shell material.

Yeah, what Frank said.  The Go Pro camera stuff comes with the 3m tape and they're stuck on many helmets. I've used a GO Pro for one season and haven't had a failure.
I'd use that alcohol prep to clean it. (rubbing alcohol)

I'd avoid using Gorilla Glue , no strike that, I wouldn't use Gorilla glue to stick anything to your helmet.  It's a polyurethane glue and expands (foams) as it dries.  It'll make a complete utter mess out of anything you're working on.

It's waterproof. It does stick to many materials.  It's gap filling properties are better than waterproof wood glue when gluing wood. It'll glue wet wood.  It'll work on tile.  It's got it's uses.  It's just some messy messy stuff and there are other adhesives that work as well.

I'd go to a 2 part epoxy like System 2 if a double backed 3m tape won't do what you need it to do. http://www.woodcraft.com/PRODUCT/2000342/2603/SYSTEM-THREE-5-MINUTE-EPOXY-12-PINT.ASPX?refcode=10INGOPB&gclid=CInDjtq-ubYCFe5QOgodM0AAuw (http://www.woodcraft.com/PRODUCT/2000342/2603/SYSTEM-THREE-5-MINUTE-EPOXY-12-PINT.ASPX?refcode=10INGOPB&gclid=CInDjtq-ubYCFe5QOgodM0AAuw)

My 2 cents.
