Cool thanks for posting.

Cool fuel gauge :good2:.
George
Man that's a sweet bike.
wicked bike, i like the ducati style fuel gauge
So the FJ and XJR have basically completely different frames, right?
Still, anyone have any examples of someone doing a similar cafe look on an FJ?
I think I could dream of making my bike into something like this one day, if it's feasible on this frame. (I'm not interested in a custom frame--and thus suspension--setup at this point.)
Edit: I feel certain it can't be done. I think that fantasy will just have to be getting an XJR one day, which has been my one choice for a modern bike pick if I could have one for a while. I just now have to add to that fantasy doing a cafe build on it.
While I hate the idea of just copying the bike, I can't imagine doing one better than that. Love that bike.

Since Yamaha didn't see fit to bring the XJR into the US (but you can get the engine), the difficulty factor is a bit higher.
I know, I know.
We should start a petition to get it here. I know at least on the XJbikes forum that they were equally longing for one. There have to be others who want it as well.
dont know why you guys never got the xjr,s, , would like one myself, , maybe you could send the cash and i could buy a shipping container, fill it with xjr,s and ship it to randy to distribute
I think if I had a spare FJ engine I would look for a cheap Yamaha XS frame to build a cafe bike. As I have neither I will be happy with my FJ as is.
The tank on the bike bike doe's look like a old Ducati tank. I had one of those Ducati's once and after many hours of working on it trying to keep it running, I had a few beers one evening , dug a big hole in the ground, buried the bike in said hole, put a few bullet holes in to it making sure it was dead and buried it. About a year later I was given a apple tree and I planted it on top of the Ducati grave..... Enjoyed a few more beers. Sold the property, I wonder if anyone dug that apple tree up ?
George
It is a Ducati tank, and that is quite a story.
That spare XS frame isn't a bad idea. I might hold onto that one for a day when I have some money.

The story is true.
The tank on that bike above is similar to the Ducati tank I had but the bottom is flared out, my tank was not, and I didn't have that fuel level viewer. Mine didn't even have a gauge, just a reserve lever. It was a piece of crap. One of the worst bikes I ever owned.
"Ducati's making mechanic's out of perfectly good riders since 1947" (even the date is a little fuzzy in Ducati histroy). Italians!!!! Please don't hit me to hard about being down on Italians, most of my in law relatives live in two towns just out side of Pisa (and I love them dearly). Italy has a lot of corruption in government and the EU is in bad shape. And there in lies the biggest problem of Italian bikes and products, slow parts train, very high prices, and prices are not stable. The stability part is the killer.
I remember the last Ducati "surge" in the 70's. It ended with dealers stuck with misc parts, no bikes, and no hope of ever getting any.
But then I remember when BMW was begging anyone with a bike related business to be a dealer for them. After they became the in thing, they went around to the same mom and pop dealers trying to crush them.
Now can I pick on Harley's :wacko2: :wacko2: :wacko2: , naw, another day another place..

While that *IS* a SWEET BIKE, my first thought was hitting a large, hard-shelled June bug at wide-fuckin'-open throttle and evenly coating my visor and the front of my jacket with razor sharp chitin-shrapnel and sticky, yellow-green innards!
At least the FJ windscreen will deflect the remnants up-and-over us shorter riders.
...and yeah, why didn't we get the XJR in the States? Wot's up widdat???
Steve
The reason that Yamaha didn't and won't import the XJR is because of strict emmission laws.
We've talked about this before and here is a link to a posting i made on the subject.

If you really, really want one, you've got two options. Either import a complete bike or build one up from parts, which is not hard as i've built 2 based around FJ's.

Good question... Prior to their introduction, I was a guest at a Yamaha dealer convention here in the US, where they had both the TRX850 and the XJR1200 on display. We heard nothing but very positive comments for both of them, and neither made it to the States. :unknown:

Anything is possible with time, effort and loads of $$$$.
If you want me to take some measurements sometime, i've got 2 XS1100's and and XJR1200 to work from.

I'll bet it was the GODDAM HARLEY LOBBY, terrified of the competition! :dash2:

Withholding any model from the biggest market in the world seems strange indeed.
With the lineage between the XJR and the FJ being so obvious I can understand their appeal but I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone would want a naked bike. Unless of course you only ride to the shops.
I recently rode the FJ a short distance without the fairing at highway speed and my immediate thought was, how did I ever do it, and at much higher speeds over much greater distances. Even with youth on my side I remember it being hard work, sometimes painful. Even without a stiff head wind it becomes the limiting factor in how far you can ride.
I did 725km's yesterday with much of the day at around 130km/h, even a 20yo would have trouble with that on a naked bike, and the only thing that needed a rest was my arse. Other than that I arrived back home feeling fine. I guess if you only do short or slow trips it wouldn't matter.

:boredom:
Maybe one day I'll get it, but I have driven 14 hour days at 80-100mph on a naked bike and not been bothered. I have never noticed any neck strain from being on a motorcycle--any motorcycle, any ride. It's just not something that comes into play for me.
I can imagine it would be very 'comfortable' to have the wind completely deflected from your face--I am thinking of whether I would prefer a road trip sticking my head out of the window of a car vs. sitting behind the windshield with the air blowing past. But at the same time, there's a thrill to standing up in a convertible or out of a sun roof--and that's more the feeling that motorcycling's about for me.
Tall windscreens and accompanying fairings are so aesthetically unappealing on a bike (for me), and with a full face helmet, the benefit is minimal (for me). I think the biggest problem with the original FJ1100 is usually that big windscreen, frankly. That breaks the aesthetics. If/when I do get an FJ11 someday, I'd like to cut a custom windvisor that's a lot shorter.
And yes, I get bugs on my visor and, much more rarely, on my mesh jacket. I wash them off. I've never been really bothered by them. Since I'm not crashing, might as well put that gear to use for something...
I guess we've been over all this before. I just always feel so puzzled to see someone care so much about something that means nothing to me. To each their own.

I doubt you would have the same opinion in a cold rain. While I too do not like tall wind screens, it is amazing to me just how much our comparatively small sport-bike screens do to protect from the elements, most notably, cold rain.

I grant you that. And on the same trip, I experienced some rain. Very unpleasant. On the FJ, it's nice to be able to lay down in exceptionally cold weather or in rain.
