Title: New to FJ forum
Post by: RollyK on April 04, 2013, 04:45:20 PM
Hello Everyone, my name is Roland and I am the proud owner of a 1986 Fj1200 that was sitting for 17 years.  The price was right.  It was free. It's not in bad shape other than the tank and carbs are full of varnish, clutch master and slave need a rebuild and everything rubber (tires and lines) need to be replaced.  Not that bad when you consider the price.  I am a Engineering Technologist (designer) and this isn't my first bike that I have had to rebuild from the wheels up.
I hope to hear from you knowledgeable Yamaha folk as I will be asking a few questions.

Thanks

Welcome Rolly, thanks for the intro. Sounds like you will fit in fine with this motley bunch.
Many of us had to do exactly what you are doing to resererect a neglected FJ. Let us know how we can help.

Cheers lad.  Pat

It won't be red and white when it's finished.  I've got some ideas.  It's going to be a tribute to the previous owner's brother (the origonal owner) who passed away in a plane crash.  Think Blackbird!  I'll definitely post pics when it's done.

This site is great.  The people really make you feel welcome.  Thanks All.

My polishing kit is at the ready as well.  Bike has dual polished supertraps.  Pretty much anything aluminum will be polished.  Had lots of experience with it as all 4 of my snowmobiles, still have the 2 yamahas, have had major polish work done.

I guess I should go take some before pictures even though I have the poor thing half torn apart. (yes fasteners all labelled in baggies and pictures of critical bolts etc).  I learned from my last experience. Five bucks spent on zip lock bags and dollar store tubs is well worth it.
I'll post pics as I work my way thru.

Welcome Roland. Bags and tubs, where is the fun in that? Just put it all in one big pile, better than any jigsaw puzzle! Think of all the fun you can have figuring it out, hours and hours of fun! Can't figure it out then just go the Yamaha dealer and order new. :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

Wait, when you say "Blackbird" do you mean X-R71 or CBR1100XX?  I, for whatever reason was thinking the latter.

Edit: I just realized Leon asked the same thing.

SR-71, Dan....  That would be a fitting look for the mighty FJ!

personally, I was thinking cbr1100 but the sr-71 idea seams interesting.  Wonder how I can pull that one together?Think I'm going satin black, lots of polished aluminum with a slight hint of red.  Just got a little extra cash, so parts can now be ordered.  I want to make sure this thing is running strong before I go too far.

Hello FJowners

I almost feel as if I have to introduce myself again.  I am still located in Strathroy, Ontario.  Believe it or not, I am almost finished the 86FJ (not white and red now).  Paint needs final polish, just shimming the valves today and the carbs need to be synchronized.  Lots of changes, GSXR rear wheel, FZ1 forks, R1 front wheel, blue dots, Honda F4i rear shock, aftermarket speedometer.  Thanks to all of the people who posted the "How to" for all of this.

RollyK (Roland)

pictures will be coming shortly.  I still have to polish the paint and fab up a dash panel.  I've really enjoyed this project.  The research that the FJ community has placed on this board is really fantastic.  I really have to send out thanks to the contributers.   All of the updates have really changed the appearance.  As far as the ride, only time will tell.  It's too cold to try it out.  Maybe in April.

Have a Happy New Year.

Hey RollyK, I missed your initial introduction a while ago. I grew up in Delaware just 20 min away.  Many of my friends are still in the Delaware/London/Komoka area.

I get down there a few times a year (now in Scarborough).  I'll send you a pm next time I'm that way in the warmer weather. Maybe we can hook up for a ride, or just shoot the shit.   (popcorn)  :drinks:

I got it done in May.  I've just been too busy to post the pics.  Many, Many, Many thanks to those who contributed their ideas on this website for the swaps.  I did the GSXR rear wheel swap, CBR mirrors, CBR Rear Shock, Braided lines and safety wired the petcock.  I kind of did my own thing for the front end.  I got a set of FZ6 SP2 forks with brakes real cheap, modified the FJ lower triple to 43mm, put in a 1.0kg/mm spring set and used a modified FZ6 top triple.  The wheel and rotors are 2002 R1.  I welded the panels back together and sprayed the body midnight blue pearl. What I love about this bike is that motor.  Holy Shit does it have torque.  It's hard to keep that back wheel from spinning.  I hope the picture comes thru.

Thanks, took a minor detour from the first "Blackbird" idea, but I just fell in love with this color.  I didn't turn out too bad for a garage paint job.  The chin spoiler still needs the insulation replaced. The power and sound coming from this antique (it's considered a "classic" here) is nothing short of awesome. I put close to 8000KM (5000mi) on it since the end of May.  I think I need a Corbin though.  The butt is a little sore after a tank of fuel is thru the carbs.

I call it Metal Chip blue. Could use just a tad more purple, but it's close.

Nice color.  The midnight blue pearl transitions from blue to purple to black.  Lots of metallic flake too.
