Ken
on the front of bike near the stearing head you will find the Aussie compliance plate which will have the month and yr of manufacture, if its an 10th 11th or 12th month manufacture its actually the next yrs model(10/86 is an 87 model0 hope this helps

On the serial# tag, mine sez it was built on 10/89. You should have that same visibility.

thanks for the replies , as it was imported from japan recently i dont think it would have a ADR plate(is that what its called) on the headstock with the date on it, or will it?
anyway i will find out thursday when it gets here,  and let you know, thanks again , ken  , on my xj it only had the short vin but it can be exstrapalated out to 17 figures
with some homework.
