So I dismantled my anti-dive units today.
1. I don't get why the repair manuals say you can't do it.
2. Still don't get how they actually work- not that it matters.
Did figure out that the lower piston spring went "wonky", causing it to hang up.
Does anybody have any "junk units" laying around for spring sacrifice?
P.S. Not interested in upgrading forks at this time.

The AD units were, IMHO ineffective technology from the onset. They were pretty much universally panned by the reviewers in 1984 and again in 1985, and by 1986 they were gone, never to be seen again. That should tell you something. Most folks remove them and simply install a flow-through block off plate like this:

Baring that, if you want to do it on the cheap, you can remove the internals and leave the units themselves on the forks to act like, well, large flow-through block off plates. There are one or two purists around that will see value in the intended function of the units, but from where I sit, these folks are grossly out-numbered by those that have disabled/ removed theirs.

Another CHEAP way to defeat the A/D units is to drill a few holes in the damper rod above the tapered spindle shoulder.
With these holes drilled, you can leave the A/D units untouched.

The easiest way...and no drilling is required.
Install some RPM fork valves. You can leave the SD installed and remove the top portion for the brake system and ride on.

Oops, you are correct. I stand corrected. They WERE still pretty much universally paned, near as I can tell, and Yamaha did abandon them. I was given, and have since passed on, some brochures and articles about the early FJs -interesting reads that they were. The marketing literature made it sound like the best thing ever, in 84 and did not/ barely mentioned it in the '86 stuff IIRC, whereas the 5 or 6 journo articles I had, either said they could not tell a difference or they outright did not like it. Not what Yamaha was hoping for when you consider the R&D dollars that certainly went into it.

It's a decent 1985 FJ1100 . . .
Is there any place that sells the anti-dive blocker plates, that is not eBay/PayPal?
If I knew how big the bypass channel in the plates needs to be, maybe I could have them made.
