Title: FNG from Seattle!!
Post by: xoomer on March 12, 2013, 10:34:32 PM
Hey all,

I picked up a 86 fj1200 from craigslist and well I kinda got taken.  :(   but no worries!  I've got it here now, and I'm working on it slowly!

I've sealed the tank, and need to come up with a petcock solution.  I've rebuild the carbs and pulled out the extra washers they put in  baffle to lean it out. now as far as I can tell my carbs are stock but I still can't get her to run...  I've got a Parts list of stuff I'd like to track down, perhaps someone could point me in the right direction?

Zach

Welcome Zach ! You have found the right place here! Many nights of reading the postings and files. Did she run before you started to work on it ? I don't understand the "baffle to lean it out" ? The petcock deal you need to pay attention to. I will let someone else with more experience with it chime in. Mine is a newer model with a different system. Here is a link to get you thinking   http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=2264.0. (http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=2264.0.) In the "Files" section there is a link for a downloadable service manual that might also help.
Need more info on won't start ? Hang in there, its all fixable and you are in the right place.

Here's a solution - You can buy my V-Max that's sitting in a garage in Tacoma!

Welcome to the forum. There are a lot of good people here. I assume you checked timing/spark?

sorry, I meant the plastic spacer that is on the slide needle. I'm also having major issues with a Vacuum leak I think. so I'm doing things slowly. :)  My o-rings are bad.

you need to put those plastic spacers back in.... by taking them out you actually lowered the needles .... thereby starving the carbs for fuel as the needles are now blocking the entire jet.

the fix we normally do for the carbs is to add a thin shim on top of the plastic spacers in order to richen them up a bit.

Well, damn.  I read that if you thin it out, it will richen the mixture.   shit I'll do that.  and get some good o-rings :)  Thanks!

Welcome Zach. Spend some time reading here, check out the Files section, lot's of good stuff saved there.
Get a Haynes manual or better the Yamaha shop manual. Study, then ask your questions.

Don't dick around with the old petcock or buying a old used petcock.
Buy a new one from RPM. (Cheaper than going to a Yamaha dealer)
Tip: the 84/85 petcocks are 1/2 the price of the '86+ electric reserve petcocks.
Many folks find the electric reserve switch function annoying.

Cheers!

$2,500. I live in Hungary and I have no intention of going back to Washington any time soon. I LOVE the bike, but I just can't justify keeping it. The title is already signed and at the bike's location.

I hope I didn't hijack the topic of this thread too much. :pardon: I'm sure you'll get your FJ running soon!

Ha ha... nope. Retired after 22 years active duty. Now I do the same job with a beard, in civilian clothes, with more pay, less responsibility, no deployments, and I must leave work by 4:00 P.M. :yahoo:

Welcome aboard FNG Seattle.  I'm sure that you'll get that FJ sorted soon.  I gotta say though tha VMax looked like a sweet deal too.  I'm as new as you are, I was able to find the FJ1200 Clymer for like $10 on Amazon, and put speed bleeders on yesterday. That's about all I'm doing for now.

Take care,

Jim
