Started stripping the wheels today, used a product by "Mar Hyde" called tal-strip. It comes in a spray can cost $10.00. Going to get both wheels stepped with one can. Spray the stripper on the wheels wait 20 minutes then start scrapping the paint off. Took about 90 minutes a wheel. Looks like some wire brushing soon then to the powder coaters. Found this stuff at the local Napa store.

I spent alot of time stripping my first set of wheels. Then my powdercoater said it didn't matter he had to dip them anyway. I didn't do anything with the last set. Cost the same . You might want to check withh your powdercoater first.
I checked with several in my area they all told they needed to be stripped or bead blasted before powder coating. All had a extra charge of $40 to $60 to blast them. If I clean them up its 35 to 50 a wheel.

Same here.. Just picked up my FZR front wheel this morning. 50 bucks full in. Nice shinny black.
George
My powder coater quoted me 10.00 to strip only and 50.00 for everything.
George
I just had my FZR front rim powder coated. Including taxes it was $65.00. They bead blasted and coated the rim, didn't give me an option to bead blast it myself.
Fred
i applied a stripper to my FZR wheels and then used a pressure washer to blast the paint off. Saved a lot of time and effort scraping. Regards, Pete.
Had my front wheel done for $45 including striping. Bearings were another $30 including labor and a new tire.
All in all, $160 including the cost of a new tire ready to mount.

There's a place on Main St in Speedway that does a lot of custom stuff, and another one in Mooresville.

Wow, I guess I live in an expensive area?? I just called three local powder coating shops and was quoted $100 -$120 per wheel (the assumes I do the diss-assembly / stripping/ and de-greasing!!)
I was thinking it would be cool to change the real-pain-in-the-ass-to-clean white wheels on the GSXR to satin black but for the $300+ it would take, with me doing a bunch of the work, seems not worth it. Especially when I read that others can get it for so much cheaper. Hell, I could probably buy new (to me) wheels for that $$.

You do...
Part of what drives the prices down in Central Indiana (besides the large manufacturing base) is the presence of a lot of race teams.
There are several coaters in the area, and all of them are kept pretty busy.
Nice thing is a lot of them specialize in fitting in small jobs. The production runs pay the bills, but many of them like the individual project stuff.
A suggestion is log on to a local motorcycle forum and ask who is doing powder coating in the area. That's what I did and located a small shop motorcycle friendly. As it turned out he was only 2 miles away....

Just got my gsxr rear wheel, cushdrive hub, brake bracket, and smart car cross member in satin black for $145. Big globs of grease and dirt. Didn't even wipe it down. Hytech coatings in Waukesha .
I called the other day about having my wheels powder coated, out of the ten shops I called only two would do them and they wanted $100.00 each, bearings out, rotors off and clean. Saw the prices on the forum though that was too much, just paint for now.
