I cant find Mr Bean! I have used the search option with no luck
His user name is PdxFJ, and his name is Garth. I myself would be willing to help, but I've never done either by myself yet, and though I've learned a lot, I'm still not the most mechanically competent (don't ask me about my recent snafu with carb's). I've always had a competent friend over watching me, and keeping me from breaking something else. Having said that, I'd be willing to provide whatever assistance I could.
hahaha, who,s a dickhead then,, went looking for garths info for you, and stupid me didnt read the post that allready has the info :dash1:
Yup.. I'm in Porkland...err.. Portland..
I have a carb sync tool but no valve adjustment tool. Carb sync is rather straight forward but the valve adjustment can be a bit tricky and time consuming. Plus it requires a totally cold engine. I have access to the valve tool but it's not something I am comfortable doing for someone else.
What time frame are you looking for help with this? I am happy to help but just about every moment of free time I have, I am using to finish up a nearly 10 month long project in my house. With the momentum I'm keeping I'll be done about Easter weekend. Don't want to slow down because I REALLY want to be done with it. I'm growing tired of working on it as I'm sure you can guess, but the end result is turning out better than I had ever imagined.
Anyway, I'm in SW Portland (Burlingame area) and have all the tools and a lift table for a bike. If you're willing to wait a bit you are more than welcome to bring your FJ over and we can sync the carbs.
Welcome to the group and it's nice to see another FJ around the area. The three of us will have to invade one of the bike nights this summer. Show the kids what a real bike is.
I've got a valve adjust tool I can contribute. I'm up in the North Portland area myself. I can tell you that we may run into an issue getting the replacement shims. I'm lucky because I live near Viscious Cycle (off of N. Going & Interstate), and they've had what I needed in stock. I'm not saying that no one else in town has them in stock, only that I found out most places (including Cycle Gear) have to order them in. Just wanted to give you a heads up on that.
ok sweet. I'm glad to hear that we have a couple different fjs in my neck of the woods! I would appreciate some help with valves feralrdr , I don't know if they need to be done right away for sure, but the guy I bought it from didn't do them and he had it since 2008.and pdxfj, if you want to help with the sync I would appreciate it, and if you need help with your house let me know!the po also mentioned that he didn't sync the carbs after he put a stage 3 dynajet kit in it....btw, I have a stage one kit if one of you ptowners want it for cheap. anyhow, I actually live in Gresham now off of 181st and powell and am down to ride or get a beer or whatever whenever. let me know!
I really hate posting on April Fools Day, and my first post non the less...but I am also in the Portland area(well..I just moved to Aloha). :hi:
If you guys have not done the carbs yet I would love to join. My bike could really use some TLC, I can do the work myself, but it is always nicer when there are other people around. :good2:
I might be interested in the Stage 1 kit.
I would also be up for some ridding, my 'normal' trip is along 14 to the bridge of the gods and then bring 84 back so I can stop for ice cream at the falls.
So...being a newbie I would just like to say Hello to everyone and look forward to meeting everyone.

Just sync them 2 at a time as per the service manual :).

Hey gents,
My project from hell is just about done. Shouldn't be too much longer and I can open my garage to help ya out. Also have a large covered patio and grill.. sounds like a work day with food and beer is in order eh?
Yet another FJ'er in the area. Excellent!
You are a special guy Garth...

With a Porter or Stout, something from a food cart, and your FJ. When they pitch a fit about you being parked on the sidewalk, just tell 'em it's a bicycle with a motor.
I'm happy I live 40 miles from Portland, I work there, that's enough for me, LOL. On the topic, I'm of no help with carb projects, I've never synced carbs before and don't know how. My little 550 suzuki sure needs it. I'm going to be sending Randy my carbs for overhaul and tune when I buy the new exhaust he's been developing... after I fix 2nd gear, ugh.

Porter, stout, check... Can I slip in a few IPAs? I love the hops and kick of a good IPA. So I can keep my ambulance colored
bike er bicycle with a motor, but need to change my personal look to Black Power Ranger????

Sounds like a plan. The goth look is still in downtown so no problems there. Just go easy on the IPA's, especially the dark ones; they gotta kick that would make a howler monkey scream. No Pun intended.
Of course,.... you could just go to Horse Brass and order a 'Pint a Billy', and a Scotch Egg to help absorb the alcohol from the 'Billy'. But then, you'll need to order another 'Pint a Billy' to help cut the grease and cholesterol from the Scotch Egg. It could lead to a vicious cycle, so do be careful. :drinks:

Ohhhh yeah. Had my first Scotch Egg a few weeks ago.
Tasty, but I swear I could hear my arteries hardening.
there are quite a few good micro-brews in this awful city....buuuut its hard to drink a good ipa when you walk in to one of them and you are immediately engulfed in a cloud of BO....haha

Even if you send the carbs off to Randy they will need to be synced on your bike. A bench sync only will get you so far.
I've got a Morgan CarbTune. Once setup, it only takes a few minutes to dial them in.

My old brewing partner retired from Skunk Works and now lives just out side of Portladia. I stopped in a few years ago and we went pub crawling, what an awesome place to live in. When I return I will make it a point to visit with you Garth and the others members in the area.

Let me check to make sure it really is a stage 1 and you should check to make sure they will work on your 84, mine are for a 92 and i dont know if there is a difference between the 1100 and 1200
Yes, there is a difference in jetting between an 84 and 90 bike. You need a specific kit for your model year of bike.
Another option is to talk with Randy and just buy the jets you need and shim your needles. Way cheaper..
Working as fast as I can to get things done....

Thanks for the info.
Ok...it has been awhile now...did you guys ever do this? How is the house coming along? Need any help with that project?
Also, as you guys know....it is super nice out. I was going to go for a ride after work today, would one of you be up for it?
Hope everything is going well. :hi:

Hasn't happend yet. If I wasn't so broke right now I'd roll with today!
My pain in the ass project is completed and I am now working on getting the garage back in order, while working on my carbs.
You can see what my project was here: http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=8848.0 (http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=8848.0)
What is everyone wanting to do? Seems some people wanted to sync carbs.. plus ?

Well to be honest...I am up for anything. I don't know that many people around here...and even less that ride..lol
It would be nice to be able to hang out with someone that knows what they are doing. I could stand to learn a lot.
Even if you just needed an extra pair of hands.
I am at work in Wilsonville until 5pm. but after that I am as free as a bird. :dance2:
I think the plan is to have it on a Saturday or Sunday. Just makes more sense to do that instead of after work during the week.

I have a child on the weekends..but if it is my daughter..she would love it..if she could come that is...if you look at my profile picture..you can see she is also a total biker and is very well behaved. If not..I might be able to make some plans around it.
Well, I mainly started this thread wanting to do carbs and valve shims. I tried synching the carbs to the best of my ability with my homemade manometer that is only for two carbs at once. So I'm down for whatever but I work on saturday Until 3 and have training on Sundays 1-4

I could use all the help I can get...it would also be nice to see one that is fully put together in person.
I know I said I was 'cheap' before, but I was really just trying to be funny.
This bike needs a lot of TLC, and I am surprised it even goes down the road, but it has been a life saver for me and I need to pay a bit of attention to her...But the PO/s have really butchered the wiring.
But I know my fuel delivery also needs help. :dash2:
If you wanted to stop by a Saturday afternoon that would be fine with me. Just need to get my garage back in order before having you gents over. Not being able to find tools is a pain.. I am busy this weekend..Maybe next weekend.. won't know more until early/mid next week..
Brad: No problem with me if you want to bring your daughter. If she's into bikes I'm sure she won't get bored watching us work.
Very easy to sync all 4 carbs at once with my CarbTune. Valves are a different story and can be rather time consuming the first time around. Sadly not something we will be able to do at my place since the engine must be stone cold.
No problem checking fuel hose routing and such.
sounds good to me. just get back with a time and place! actually, if you guys are interested I think that there is a motorcycle swap meet from 9-6 in Mololla. would be a fun ride if its nice.
the swap meet is this Saturday...I meant! haha  at least I saw a flier for one.....
Hey you guys...are we still on for this Saturday? :dance2:
I plan on going for a nice ride with Bianca on Sunday..I was thinking about going to Tillamook to get some ice cream, then up to Seaside just because, and then work on our way back.
If anyone would like to join us let me know. :)
Feel like an ass since I need to push it out another week. Not in any kind of position to lend a hand.. meaning the garage is still a mess.. plus my FJ is carb-less at the moment.. and the rally is just around the corner..
My work areas are usually a disaster, and I get really frustrated if I can't find tools when giving someone else a hand.. I give you my word I will get you gents over.. I know things don't need to be perfect.. but they do need to be cleaned up enough to get bikes in and locate necessary tools..
No problem Pdx! I would invite you guys over but I don't even have a garage at my apartments haha.
Brad, I work Saturday until 3... and I don't get paid until Monday so I don't know if ill have enough money... but let me see what I can do....
