Title: FNG From Avon Ohio
Post by: Jim 92FJ on March 05, 2013, 07:57:24 AM
Hello everyone! I am purchasing a '92 FJ1200 this weekend and wanted to say hello and introduce myself.  I'm a retired Army Master Sergeant and currently work for the Defense Dept.

I have a 2010 Honda VT1300 and recently sold a 77 Honda Goldwing.  I recently found a pristine FJ with just 8,000 miles on the ticker. I've never seen anything so clean, purchased it from an Engineer. Look forward to chatting with folks about maintenance, rallys, and accessories.

Cheers!

Welcome Jim, always room for one more FJ lunatic. With so few miles I hope he ran it or stored it properly, Otherwise your gonna need to clean out them carbs. Tires will need to be changed unless already have been recently. Check all the rubber bits, they don't like to sit.

Thanks guys, I posted a couple of photos at the Gallery. The tires are brand new, it fired right up last week and I believe it was like 24 F.   The fellow I'm purchasing it from is (like me) in the over 50 club and took impeccable care of it. More pics to follow this Saturday.

Welcome aboard Jim. I'm about 70 miles south of you in Wayne Co. and also a member of the 50+ club.  We'll have to get together for some rides - and maybe even do the NE summer rally in Maine.  According to the weather forecast I'll be riding this weekend.  Keep in touch.

Congratulation Jim on getting the FJ and welcome to the group. Sounds like you will fit right in, a lot of 40 or 50+ forum members and ex-military. Think about going to a rally.  :hi:

Welcome Jim, from Downunder. Did ya come away from the defense department with any "Goodies"? We need an ally with somethin stronger than a potato cannon!....so our representatives can defend their Aussie honour at your next Rally.

Yamaha FJ Rider, the General and all,

Thanks guys, I am truly excited about being a part of such an exclusive club. I had a '77 Goldwing that I learned a lot from, and hope to be able to apply that acquired knowledge towards this bike. I did a year in Iraq, 4 years in Germany, 4 years in Italy and 3 years in Korea, but not yet down under, that would be a great experience.  One of my favorite movies was "The World's Fastest Indian".  One of these days I'll venture down there. Also enjoyed "The Long Way Round/Down" and a book called "Jupiter's Travels".

Utah and Idaho look like places I can make it to on the FJ1200! You guys ever make it up to the Cleveland Ohio Area, look me me up. I got the space!

G'Day there Jim,
nice intro mate, good to hear there's another FJ owner who's into keeping these bikes going.
It'll be riding season in your neck of the woods soon and a few of the listers get together for rides and rallies.
Nowhere is all that far on an FJ and yours sounds like a beauty.
Jump on it and ride out to a rally.
See you there.

Welcome Jim.
I'm pushing the 5-0 and ex-military (USAF) and just have one thing to share with you.
Attend a rally ASAP!!!!!.
We are a great group, ( if I do say so myself) and the rallies I have attended have been some of the best fun on a bike I have ever had.
Some of these guys have some MAD riding skills, and I have learned a lot just being with them.

Make NO excuses! Just DO IT!!
You can thank me later.

Leon

Welcome Jim.  Nice intro.  You FJ looks beautiful.  A note,  it looks sharp in all black, and you may know this, but I do not believe it's factory paint. She does look good though, and 8K miles is a find indeed.

Welcome to the group, nice looking ride in all black. You will find quite a few of us are in our 40's and 50's. Not quite 50 yet, 3 1/2 years to go  :greeting: Former Marine myself.

Being in Northeast Ohio there are 3 Rally's within an easy jaunt for the FJ. Spring East Coast Rally in Boone, NC., Fall East Coast Rally in Tellico Springs, TN., and the Northeast Rally, not sure if the location and dates have been set yet.

I would really love to visit Australia.   Glad to see that these bikes made their way throughout the world :good:  Appreciate the former military folks on this site, and everyone really.  I got the bike home on Saturday, the temps were around 50 F that day so I had to take advantage of it.

A learned a little history of the bike from the PO.  It was originally owned by a guy that had owned his own body shop.  This guy hated the original purple color from'92 so he painted it black.  He actually did a much better job than they do at the factory (Jap paint is never a quality finish IMO).  There are a few light scratches but over all it does look quite nice.

The very first thing I purchased was the Clymer Manual (I gotta know what I'm dealing with here).  The next thing I ordered were speed bleeders.  The brakes function great but have probably never been bled in the past 21 years. I learned from my '77 Goldwing that MC fluids aren't like a fine wine...   The bike is 100% stock and I'll try to keep it that way.

It's an amazing bike to ride, can't wait to link up with you folks at a rally, or two, or three :i_am_so_happy:

Well, it's already been repainted a non standard color, so there goes your 100%!
The mods are many and quite well done to enhance the ol FJ.

A swap to a 17 rear wheel is usually on the top of most owners list, and then from there, upgrade the brakes and suspension.
Any other mods after these are just frosting on the cake.

Trust me, mine started out even most stock than yours (factory pink stripe) and it is twice as nice now with all the mods added to it, up to this point.
The FJ is very receptive to mods, and the pay off is 10 fold for your riding enjoyment.

Hope we meet up at a rally some day.

Take Care,
Leon

:good:You're right about the bike color Tinindian, and I actually like it much better than the original violet.  I've modified my VT1300CT a fair amount, so I'm not gun shy.  Next thing I want is one of those Reevu helmets that has the mirror built in. Also may want a Heli-Bar if I can find one.  I'm a federal employee and about to get furloughed, so I may have to hold off for a little while.

Hi Jim. Welcome to the group. I also from downunder ( melbourne ) hot as hell here at the moment. Your bike looks nice. Mines an 88-9 factory black. Its my third one, same model as my others. If you find a spare set of HELIBARS  please let me know. I'm wanting a set to. they are no longer made for the FJ so the manufacturer says. Good luck with the bike. Regards jeff

Hello Jeff, Thank you for the welcome. I for one would gladly trade our weather for yours right about now.  Helibars are harder to find than chickens teeth right about now.  I contacted Randy at RPM about some Risers that he fabricated back in 2009. I'll let you know what I find out.   My back is just fine for an old coot, but my wrist takes a good hammerin... Cheers. Jim
