Title: At Last....First proper test ride
Post by: Jeff0308 on February 12, 2013, 06:28:51 AM
Well. I finally got a permit for my FJ today so I can take it to see about a RWC. Not certain as to the future of the bike yet if I will be keeping it. Its been a bitch of week / year  to put it mildly and its only just started...... Anyway.... Got the permit today and took it for a ride to maybe look at getting  a few bits. Its the first time I have had a decent ride and I thought well If I dont do it now I  may never  do at all.  Ohhhhhhh did it bring more than a smile to the dial...... Hell yes!!!.....I have forgotten as to how quick / well they perform. I dont remember my last one being like this. Its like a 747. So smooth and very bloody quick.( FUCK THE PETROL COST  I GOT V8 POWER.) I didnt make it to the bike shop. Bugger, but thats just going to have to be  for another day. Just decided to go for a little cruise instead. Forgot just how much these beautys get the adrenalin motivated.. Bastard near spat me off the back. Near brown moment. Am happy to say the engines got 80thousand km on it but is as smooth as silk. Usual FJ rattles but thats it. All friendly ones.   Am to used to my trail bike. Well after the  nerves calmed down, I settled in for a few Kms of cruising. Didnt do anything to serious but then I didnt want to chance it  as its only a permit I didnt want to get busted. thats all I need!. Just a sedate cruise WITH THE OCCASIONAL YEHAAAAAA MOMENT  Could have quite easily gone for miles and miles but an hour did me fine for now. Hope to get to the bike shop tommorrow. Im Not to fussed. If not Another cruise will do fine. Any excuse will do.  Needs tyres though.  If I do Its  going to have to be  the standard size  back on due to unpleasant  situations at the moment. Not what was planned but thats life. FJs may not be  new, but they  sure as hell are  no slouch, Thats for certain.

Good on you Jeff, I understand everything you say about reacquainting yourself with the FJ's performance, despite their age. They really are a lot of bang for your buck.
I often ride with or have had the odd on road skirmish with modern big capacity bikes and the old FJ is far from embarrassing.

The best thing about a lot of other bikes from that era is the memories, and that's where they should stay.

I never get back on the FJ after riding a modern bike feeling like the poor cousin.

And that is why their owners/fans/lovers? will not part with an FJ until forced to. Mate, I was out in the shed today tearing my '93 baby apart getting ready for the upcoming Aussie Rally, and I stood back for a bit thinking, theres no way I could ever sell this bike and buy something modern. Yes they are somewhat of a dinosaur, but with a bit of TLC and simple mods here and there, they are a freakin TYRANNOSAURUS REX!

These bikes will stand the test of time until the last drop of oil is squeezed out of the Earth, Believe it!  :drinks:

Well. I am slowly getting the FJ to the way I want it. Some bits more challenging and frustrating but thats usually with anything you do these days. One thing I have noticed, is the looks people give you on the older bikes. Its funny to see the NEWER generation bikes/bikers reactions. Some positive some not so. Had fun last week when I went out to see about a decal reproduction. Newish bike next to me takes off and so do I . Kept up quite well with the new one. Just the look was enough at the next intersection. Its interesting to hear peoples comments. A few places I have been, the comments passed are usually along the lines of either "I had one of them and they go real good", to "Gee, you dont see many of these anymore".  Is a good feeling as it seems all positive. This is my third one and dont think it will be my last either.
