I have been searching for a 87'/88' FZR1000 front wheel for some time. The search has turned up nary a one. I did a p/n cross check and found that the 87'/88' FZR750R front wheel is the same part number. I found a 88' FZR750R front wheel on eBay. The wheel should arrive in a few days, the white paint is flaked off in a few places and the wheel will be sent out to get powder coated.
Fred
Yeppers, the 1987 FZR1000 and 750R were red wheels and the 1988 FZR1000 and 750R were white wheels... Good reminder, Thanks Fred! Enjoy!
Congrats! I sent the owner an e mail and he said it was a 3.5 X 17. I was tempted to bid on it but I have to many irons in the fire as is.
I am glad someone in the group got it ! Let us know how it turns out. Wasn't the wheel from your local area ?

Sort of. The seller is in Kansas City. About a 3 hour drive North East of here.

Powder coat? I just did mine:-) Did them white though. I did get warned that they would be a bitch to get clean. But white just looks bad ass good on the FJ :good2:

I just found and purchased an 89 FZR 1000 rim as well. White $ 60 , and 65 to powder coat it black. Bike bandit had Pilot 2CT's for the front on for $101.75. Another piece of the puzzle coming together.

How are you going to approach mounting the wheel ? I am thinking of doing the same as 89 -91 wheels are easier to find in good condition. They also have mechanical speedo drive.
Choices seem to be:
1. Drilling the strut legs out to 17mm (FJ I think is 15mm) and Helli coil the other leg to fit the 89-91 Axel. Note: the Axel length is shorter by ?? mods, mods, mods :)
2. Or have a machine shop bore out the 89-91, 40 mm diameter bearing wheel bearing cups to 42 mm diameter to use the stock FJ bearings? I have to find a machine shop that will do this. I do not know how much "meat" is in the 89-91 wheel cup area I am only guessing that you could remove 2mm (a shade more than 5/64").
3. There is another way but even more custom machining of a bushing...
Or I am way off base and missing something which is very possable as I am planning this using information from the forum and internet. Everything on the internet is true, right.... I don't have a wheel on hand yet.. :) Just things rattling in my mind.

Good morning George,
I had the 3.5'' rim machined to accept the stock bearings (1991) at a local machine shop. Cost was $100 and took only a few hours.
The added advantage is that you can use the stock axle, which Mr. Conlon ensures me is the best way to go...!
Have a good day,
Mike Ramos.
Thank you, I was thinking the same. Which bearing did you use ? The FJ bearing looks to to be 1mm wider ?
Drilling out the leg would cost about 70.00 in tools (Helli coil tap kit costing the most, drill bit is inexpensive) then you have to deal with the Axel bolt length issue which I think is slightly shorter.

Yes indeed, the 15mm axle is a perfect match to your 41mm fork tubes..... Don't change it...
We have all learned that oem is the best..... (popcorn)

Actually, you only have to remove 1mm from the thickness to gain 2mm on the diameter of the bearing cup.

TNX Pat. I agree. Just getting the facts before I buy a wheel.
I got the header pipes ready for polishing. Just waiting for a little sunshine and the temps to rise before heading back out into the garage.
Next decision to make is tire size for the rear 170 or 180.... I would like the 180/55. With the F4i shock in the 1990 FJ rear at 13" c to c the rear will be high. I know that I will have to make some new dogbones. Just trying to not take all the dimension adjustments out with the dogbones. A little here and a little there so to speak. I could use the lower profile on the tire, just concerned about chain to tire clearance.

Thanks Dave, you are right. Talking diameter not linear distance. :dash2:
use over-sized brgs with stock axle , that's the ticket.
Hello again,
Yes, I did use the stock bearings, there is plenty of material in the stock rim.
Ah, Pat the word I meant is "assured"... & I do thank you for the confirmation...!
Keep smiling & ride safe.
Mike Ramos.
Sorry my wheel is from an 88 FZR1000 which bolts right on to a 90 front. No mods, same bearing, speedo etc. Got lucky as I was e-mailing someone with a 88 Fzr for sale. Was going to buy the whole bike. Lost out due to my slothness, ( procrastination ). A week later the same bike appeared on Kijiji completely stripped. All the guy wanted was the motor. To put in his phaser. Will an 88 FZR swingarm graft onto the FJ?. A friend is considering upgrading his.
OK, your one of the lucky ones with an 87-88 .
Mike, thanks. I was just concerned because the stock FJ bearings were 1mm wider. Not that 1mm is that much. Next week I will check out a machine shop and get some estimates. Then I will figure how much I want to pay for a wheel if I can not locate a good 87-88 wheel.
George
If its any help, I fitted an fz1 wheel, just needed shims for the Fj axle up to 21mm then everything else bolts up as standard Fj

If I understand you had to locate 6mm thick bushing ? 15mm id X 21mm OD. bushing/sleeve. FZ 1 wheels are also getting harder to locate but you never know what turns up and when it happens it's usually to late to find out all the info you need so all information is good. Besides someone else might go down that path. Did you buy the bushing/sleeve over the counter or did you machine it down ?
George
Had a machine shop make them , only charged $10 for the 2, all good so far , checked them a few weeks ago when doing fork seals , still tight in the bearings ,

Fj1289 is getting ready to sell a fzr 750 wheel! Same wheel as the 1000. Have him send you pics.
TNX, I will... :good2: PM sent...

I think the 1st gen FZR swing arms are the same as the 89, 90 etc aluminum FJ swingarms - had an FZR750 swingarm next to the 89 and they were nearly identical -- maybe slightly different at the axle pulls IIRC
As a side note - most of the phaser owners don't realize they can use any year FZR1000 engine - the "old" mounts are still on the engine cases and the whole engine was rotate forward in the newer frames, not just the cylinders.

That was cheap enough ! Around here you would pay a hundred dollars for doing just about anything in a machine shop. I told FJ1289 that I would buy his front wheel. Better get it while I can. This all started because I was going to replace my rear tire....... Slippery slope. Now I am in the middle of a GSXR rear wheel change, just put in a F4i shock, polished the header pipes, and now a wider front wheel..... Shit, I think I stepped on a FJ land mine......
George
We told you this would happen.....when you feel and see the enhancements, you *will* want to do more...
Trust me I know.... :bomb:
Yeah its a great shop, the owner has a zzr1100 , owned for 14 years, just bough a gsxr1000 , and his dad has owned an 86fj since new,, the local machine charged $40 for an industrial plastic bush I had made ,,
The FZR750R wheel has been received and has been sent to the shop to be powder coated. The wheel should be done Friday, waiting on the new bearings, dust seals, speedo clutch and clutch retainer.
If anyone is interested in the Rotors, let me know. No cost, just cover shipping.

What do they charge to powder coat ? For now I just painted my rear wheel with epoxy paint. I located an 87/88 front wheel and hope to close the deal here in the next few days. Got figure out shipping cost etc.. I ordered new bearings for it at any rate. It has been suggested to put a 90 degree air valve fitting on. Think I will when the time comes. I wasn't expecting to get into the front wheel this soon but what the heck....... ! Its only time and money.. What color are you going to powder coat your wheel ? Pink ? :))
George
The cost to powder coat is $65.00 and I went with Silver for the color.
Fred
Take some paint stripper to that rim, a wire brush on a cordless drill (w/gloves & goggles) and with a little scrubbing, there is a nice silver finish under all that paint.
Got my rim back from getting it powder coating. Also painted the rear hugger fender.

Looks good ! I think you should give up on the hugger and send it to me :wacko2: :wacko2: :wacko2:
She is going to be a fine machine when you are done.
George
Looks great way to go Fred!!!!!!!!! :good2:

I am at a stand still for the moment. The bike is at the shop getting the head rebuilt. As soon as I get the bike back I will fit the hugger, swap the front wheel, and finalize the modifying the exhaust.
