OK, I have a 87 fzr1000 I'm trying to get rid of to pick up my 85 fj1100.
Are there enough pieces off of the fzr that I should keep it to put on my fj (keep as in part it out), it seems kind of pointless to get rid of the whole bike and then buy back pieces of it later for a lot more money.
What parts to keep, what do I need to do to use them on the 85 fj, and or are there better choice so I should sell the whole fzr and shop for the other parts?
Any and all answers will be greatly appreciated.
You could use the wheels. You would need the 88 or newer fj fork lowers to make the front work. I believe the rear wheel works with some machining. There are some other front end swaps that use the triple tree if I'm not mistaken. That what pops into my head at the moment.

Yes keep the FZR!!
You'll want to put the FZR front end on the FJ , with some R1/R6 calipers!
I'm sure theres lots more... swingarm/wheel etc...
FIT IT!
KOOKALOO!
Thank you for your comments, however, is there somewhere that might detail what is needed, and I have seen keeping the newer front ends to add to a 85, but what on a 87 fzr1000 will fit or wont fit and what do I need to fit whatever maybe worth keeping, I am trying to sell the whole bike asap to get my fj but if i make the cash up and still have the fzr I may part it out and keep what I want for upgrades, But I dont want to take forever to part a bike out just to keep a rear wheel
any help will be appreciated
Here is a web site that may help you out.. http://www.fjmods.btinternet.co.uk/ (http://www.fjmods.btinternet.co.uk/)
It really depends on what you intend to modify on the FJ and how extensive you are willing to take your modifications. I wouldn't recommend the rear rim because it is 18", the front should be a direct fit on your bike on your bike, but like it has been said you could use the front fork, wheel and brake set up and it would be a giant improvement over the original FJ1100 set up. But, the 89-up FJ front end would also be an improvement, not as much, but an improvement just the same. It really depends on you and your patients to hunt down parts to work on your FJ. It's seems to me if you could get $1500 for you FZR as a complete bike you may be better off with the money and finding the parts for maybe $500-$800, which leaves you with some pocket money. But, if it get to where you can only get $800 for the FZR you may as well keep it. Do a little research on E-bay and see what the part for your year/model FZR are selling for, or if they are selling at all. I can tell you no one is buying the rear rim, there are plenty up for auction.
Good luck.

Right... the YZF600r fork mod uses the 87-88 FZR1000 triples (lightly modded). :good:
But then you don't need the FZR front wheel... :unknown:

So I would want the fzr600 front end but then i still need my 87 trees? and before they had told me to keep the rear wheel from the 87?
and that web site talks about exup front ends, and 87-88 are different and not exup
:dash2:

I feel your pain. :wacko3: You'll get it figured out. Be patient, it takes the brain some time to process the end goal sometimes. Like I said earlier, you need to decide how far you are willing to take your modifications. Realistically, if you change the front forks and brakes to the 89 up with the FZR1000 front wheel, and the rear wheel to the FZR1000 (17x5.50), you might find this is all the improvement you need. But, some of the other modes will yield an even better handling motorcycle. Just depends on your budget and how extensively you want to modify your bike.

OK, after checking some, the 84-85 fj1100 and the 87-88 fzr1000 are both 41mm forks, so why wouldnt I just slip the fzr's into the fj's trees, I will have the 17" wheel and the bigger brakes and stainless lines and no anti dive and more adjustable forks with a very simple swap, I would keep the master cyl also I suspect
or Not???
Just speculation, but the distance between the fork legs might be an issue... there's always something! (http://i35.tinypic.com/1hfss5.gif)
I think the width on the triple tree is different. But I don't see why you couldn't change it all out. Fred post says you need to change the lowers of the forks, not sure why, maybe because of the fender, or overall length? They have a 10mm longer travel than the 89 FZR forks as well as being 2 mm. in diameter smaller. Not sure of any about other differences.

Here is a cheap enough 89 fork tube...

they also have the match to it....
If I go with 89+ forks, would that be best, or would a usd front be better and why?
At least this is all being covered for future seaarches, HA

Wrong lowers, I see Fred said FJ 89-up lowers...duh, differnent tube diameters :wacko1: I don't know why you wouldn't just switch out 89-up complete forks set?

The 89+ forks would be the easiest to do. This would enable you to bolt on monoblock/blue spot calipers, and an 87-88 FZR 3.5" wide front wheel. Better brakes, better fitting tire, and you retain your original speedo hookup, fender. These are still damper rod forks, and do not have the adjustablity of newer cartridge style forks. You can add cartridge emulators to give you more adjustabilty when you change out the oem springs.(to soft)
The usd forks are a cartridge fork and are fully adjustable.(trick) To mount these you have to mod/change your triples...ie more work. Just depends how bad you got the mod decease..

I also have a 99-02 2002 YAMAHA YZF R6 Front Wheel with tire, is this a keeper for the future??

thoughts?
I believe the YZF 600r wheel has a different diameter axle. You would need to fab some sort of collar. You could possibly swap the entire fork assembly from the FZR. I do know that parts of the triple tree are used for other mods, so I would think it could be made to work.
The reason for using '88 and up lowers only, is that the newer the FJ the softer the front suspension. The best lowers to use would be the 88-90 then you can retain the compression adjustability, but if you wanted to you could slide in any of the later forks as a unit. The FJ swap is by far the easiest to do, if you have changed fork seals you can do this, you just need to drill a couple holes to eliminate the anti-dive.
This is the the swap I did and I am pleased with it. I used '91 lowers, a '87 FZR 1000 wheel, '94 FZR 600 Rotors and blue spot calipers from a YZF 600r. The forks work much better (probably the fresh fork oil) the bike doesn't stand up when I use the brakes and the brakes, wow, what a difference. My bike always stopped but you would wonder, with the blue spots it stops now.

Or install F3 cartridges in the '89 forks... :good:
