Title: Insurance rant
Post by: motorn on January 09, 2013, 07:26:32 PM
I live in Manitoba Canada. I just checked what my bike insurance will be this year. No collision,no theft basically my plate on the back......$1620.00. If I was to put full coverage I'd be over $2000.00. If I could ride more than 5 months out of the year,I could almost except that, but this is getting crazy in my part of the country.Because its classified as a sport bike they really make it expensive. The worst part is there are no other options for insurance here. The provincial gov't has the monopoly on it. :dash1:
Anyone else pay sky high premiums?

My motorcycle insurance (liability only) is about the only insurance I've got that seems reasonably priced.  Around $120 if I recall correctly.

I pay less than $200/year for the state required level of liability coverage (no comp or collision) on my '85 and '93 FJ and '02 FZ1.  That's for all 3, not each.

What year is your bike? I live in B.C. and we have govt. run insurance as well. I have a collector plate on my bike(86 FJ) and my ins. is only 225 dollars a year. Do they not have a similar thing in Manitoba. I can also put a declared value on the bike, which I did . Set it at 3500 and that is what my ins. costs me.

My policy costs $212 USD per year, but it's full coverage ($500 ded), includes any trailer I might have it on, and roadside assistance.      :pardon:

Ouch man!  My insurance is 75.00 per year and registration is 31.20 of which I need to pay now that it is 2013.... No annual inspections or any other stuff required.
In Idaho if you are under 18 then you have to wear a helmet. Over that you are on you own. Personal responsibility, novel concept.

I know what scams the insurance companies in Canada are.  My last time in Canada was $650 for just liability (only type of insurance possible for my 93FJ) through Jevco.  There is another company out there that is cheaper but you must have three years of uneventful Canadian insurance first.  Being out of the country so much makes it difficult for me to use that option, but thankfully, here in Panama, it is only $62 a year for liability coverage.

If anyone does go to Mexico or farther south, you can buy insurance at the borders.  Buy online if possible and shop around for Mexico.  Sanborn is the most expensive.  But if you are daring, you do not actually need insurance in Mexico.  When you enter the other countries, they will tell you if you need insurance or not.  I remember that I had to pay for insurance in Costa Rica. (cheap) and Panama ($15/month if you buy at the border)

I valued the bike at $2000. It is a 1989 in mint condition. I should have mentioned, they do have a time payment option. But the bulk of the payment is only made over a 5 month riding period. So $1620 divded by 5 = :wacko2:.The rest of the year we pay about $10.00 per month. I figure if I get pulled over the fine will be $200.00 if I don't register it.So since it isn't insured anyway, only a plate on it   :shok:.....Wait what I'm I saying, that would be illegal :blum1:

State extortion legal, ah... Poor grasshopper. That's why THE LAW carries those big sticks. Mine run about $100 a year each on average, none of them expensive enough to have a declared value IMO.

FWIW, my insurance company just notified me that the annual premium just went from $212 to $145 (full coverage).     :bomb:

I'm just renewing mine here! I have been shopping as my rates jumped to $700 for the year for liability only.. I think we are going to go with Allstate at $525/yr for the 92fj (clean record: no tickets, never speed, non smoker, blue eyes, less hair, 29yrs old,  ....... :rofl2: :rofl2:)
Thats a bit lower than what I was paying :drinks: :good2:  Maybe having all our ins with them helps with the discount thing.

The cost of "peace of mind".  Only feasible way in BC, Canada is the collector plates program.  If your mc isn't old enough (25 years) you're going to pay the big bucks.  One would think that these government agencies and/or private companies would be non-profit given the service they provide, but nooooo!  When I asked why the premiums are so high, I get a different answer everytime.  "Bikes are easy to steal, bikes are dangerous", added together with natural and man-made disasters, we're hooped.

I was told that collector plates are not available for bikes in Ontario....
I don't recall seeing one either!

I was going to come up with some smart aleck response with the possibility that Lloyds of London would be cheaper.  I'm not trying to change the direction of this thread, but man do they have a wicked building!

I pay around $700 per year for liability only. It's been roughly the same for the past 10 years or so. I usually shop around every 2 or 3 years just to compare rates and have stayed with the same company (Jevco, I believe) for quite a while. What really bugs me is that I need to pay full insurance for any additional bike. I am the only licenced rider in my household so it should stand to reason that I will only ride one bike OR the other. They want $400 per year for my '77 KZ200. Just too much for a bike that I may put a couple hundred kms on per year. So it sits. A few of my buddies are with State Farm and the work-around is that they call the agent on say, a Friday and say they want to switch insurance from their main bike to the second one. The agent starts the process but doesn't plan on submitting the paper work until Monday. They ride the second one for the weekend and then call on Monday morning first thing and ask the agent to cancel switching insurance. My insurance agent is a broker and as such, can't do that for me. I looked into switching to State Farm and they want as much to insure just the FJ as it would for both bikes combined with my current insurance company.

Sigh...

Phew, how much :shok: Guess I'll stay in UK then.

I have three bikes roadworthy at the moment. No NCD 57yrs clean license. First Insd MZ Skorpion 660 for £77. Then was amused to be able to insure FJ1200 for £66.........cheaper than MZ, how come??? Then got a slight shock, got quotes for 1963 Mobylette 50cc moped, £97   why? Can't see any sense in bike premiums here but man do I feel sorry for you guys, all mine are what you would call liability + fire +theft. Are car premiums high too or is it just an antisocial biker tax???

My buddy lives in Quebec, he told me his ins is real expensive, maybe $2,000 or so but he told me that the Govt makes y'all pay more to ride a bike because of your socialized healthcare system ie: If you want to take the risk on expensive bodily injury, you have to pay the price.

Over here in New Jersey they hit me for $200 per year with one traffic mishap. Before the mishap it was $95. Bike Reg here went up to $65 per year.

State Farm wanted $991 to renew insurance on my '93, and that's basic coverage.
I've been with them for 28 years. Never had a ticket or claim on the bike.
I switched to RidersPlus. They only do bikes. Better, but still pricey at $730.

Insurance is killing the motorcycle industry in Canada...
I really don't understand how our friends in the south, who can ride a lot more than us, pay so little.

I told my insurance agent that I point blank refuse to pay the $819.00 he was asking for, so go away and have a rethink :diablo:

He came back with a quote of $780.00!!! Now I know its only $39.00 but hey, its a wee bit back in my pocket...better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick :good2:

Here in Ontario, we have choice of insurance companies so we can shop around. I'm 54 yrs old with no infractions. The best I can do on my '88 with basic coverage is $713 (up from $698 last year). I shopped around and one agent said he would get me a deal at $998! I told him to go pound sand and stayed with my current company which is TD Bank (underwritten by Primmum).
