Anyone ever try this, I'm building a Drag Bike FJ1200 and thought there could be some rotating mass and chains removed by using an external starter but this would mean the alternator would not be able to be used as it supports the Starter Clutch and then this would also take away the oil pump drive. I was thinking if all these parts were removed and an appropriate electronic pump fitted and regulated it might save weight and remove alot of moving parts that are really not needed on a bike that is only run for a few minutes at a time.
Has anyone done this, seen this done or want to try it ??? Anyone think this would create some issues ?

Very dedicated dragbikes will occasionally do this sort of thing, but it seems really expensive for the gains. Wouldn't even consider it myself unless you're putting an incredible amount of money into the engine and looking for that last tiny bit. Usually it's done so you can put a flat pan with a dry sump on and lower the weight in the chassis further.
If you're not looking at low 7's or better, odds are the money can be put to better use.

Thanks Andy, On giving it some more thought and asking a few drag racers here they pretty much said exactly what you did, its not worth the trouble for what i want to do.
Just finished fitting a 10" stretched Gen 1 Hayabusa Swingarm it pretty much was a direct bolt on with a few spacers the main pivot bush fitted inside the Busa Pivot bearings perfectly the Linkage is in the same position i just fabricated some bushes for the dog bone attachment at the swingarm shock runs very close to the arm at stock height only a mm or 2 clearance but im lowering it about 4 inches which will give me a few more mm of clearance around the spring on the shock ! Only picked the arm up today and tonight its rolling really easy mod and my XJR 5 inch rim lines up real nice in the arm !

This does sound like a cool build. Are you planning on sharing any pics?? Ive been thinking of fitting a gsxr arm to an FJ for a while,so Id be interested to see whats been done. The arm Im planning will be a double tubed one off alloy one (made by Steelheart here in the UK)that came from a GSXR1100WP. On the drag front,im busy with a non FJ (lol)GS1150e (gsx11efe in the UK).
I think the FJ suits the look of a drag bike,especially FJ1289's!! Cool. :good2:
Here is a few quick pictures ill take some more tomorrow, have not had time to do much other than fit the arm, going to start stripping the bike down and lowering it. Its like a big trail bike right now might be good for hill climbs with a decent 180 Knobby tyre ! Going with all Dyna Ignition 2000, I already have the DRL 400 2 step, Dyna Shift minder, Dyna Shift Counter, Dyna Shift light and an MRE Airshifter and im going to convert it to CO2. My main aim is to set the bike up naturally aspirated to get the basics right first, then start chasing some power. getting the gears under cut and bottom end balanced, just need a set of decent rods and that will pretty much do the bottom end. I hope i wont have to touch the bottom end again if i do it right first time. I have APE Spring clutch conversion with Heavy Red Springs out of a Legends race car, and i thinking of modifying a lock up i have to fit if needed. I have low klm set of late XJR 1300 Nicosil Barrels and Forged Pistons 1250cc and also an XJR head and numerous FJ heads. I want to do a Higher compression head for naturlly aspirated set up first then run a stock head later when i go the turbo path later on.
This build will take time im in no hurry ( except to ride it ), and this bike was meant to be a budget drag bike ! all i am after is a reliable bracket bike that scares me a little!

Are you planning to run the XJR plated barrels? You may want to sleeve them for your turbo application.

You may want to check in with the racers.
For street use the Niksil bores are fine, low friction with better heat transfer, etc, etc...
My understanding is that the Legends folks have found the XJR plated bores to oval under hard use. Yes, these guys do go balls out 9-10k rpm for 20 laps with multiple heats in their racing, but being normally aspirated, they won't have the high cylinder pressures you will have with your turbo...
I will defer to the experts
