Started gathering all the parts to reserect the crashed 87(865 miles on it before it was crashed). That came with the 86 that I got with 10,476miles for $600.
Ordered $675 worth of parts from Randy on the year end sale.
Bought a 93 GSXR 750 rear wheel assembly complete For $ 145.
Got the list together came to about $2800 with $300 for misc.:
2008 GSXR 1000 Inverted fork complete front end from clippons to wheel
Honda F4i rear shock
New chain n sprockets
Lithium battery
New tires
Manual petcock for tank
Barnett clutch spring kit for 86 (will double up the stock spring with the spring in the 87)
Things I will make or have made:
Extensions for GSXR forks(have a different idea for the extensions)
Mate the GSXR triples with the FJ stem
GSXR clippons with risers to match the FJ
Custom brake and clutch lines
Powder coating
Ceramic coating the head pipes for both bikes
Please post before and after pics when you have the 87' resurrected.
Fred
The 87 was a parts bike. So all the bent stuff is long gone. Not much taken for parts. So it's pretty complete. It's going to be about the same as the 86. But I will take pictures
Good for you. This will be a fun project to follow, take plenty of pictures for us.
A couple of Q's:
With your GSXR front end, what is your plan for driving the FJ's mechanical speedometer?
How will you access the manual petcock?
Cheers

On the 86 I used the trail tech voyager. Mounted on stem nut. With ram mount. But I was paranoid someone would steal it. So I'm going to use trail tech vapor mounted in the gauge panel on both.
For the petcock I just removed the upper black screen in the side panel. Easy access.
Good deal Dan. Tim (axiom-r) did a very nice R-1 front end conversion on his bitchen FJ. Take a look in the member gallery. I recall that he found some tube extenders that threaded in to the fork tubes allowing the shorter YZF tubes to work.

Also, Frank Moore (racerman) installed a neat digital dash display on his beauty, although I can't seem to find any pictures of his bike (Brutus) in the gallery.
Tim, Frank, you guys got your ears on?

axiom-r used the cycle one off extenders If I remeber right. They are sleaves that slide over the top of the fork with a set screw to hold them. Like the ones I had made for the 86. But mine are a little over kill. With a slot and 3 pinch bolts to clamp them on. I'm thinking of having top caps made with the tube extended over the adjusters. But I've never had the caps off the forks to know how complicated the cap is with out the adjusters on it.
That is what I'm going to do with the tral tech vapors. I just hate cutting up the guage cluster on the 86. Its in mint condition with only 10,486 miles on the odometer
Good sounding project. :good2:
I've machined up some fork extensions for a couple of USD front end conversions which worked great and didnt cost much cash to do. I'll try to find some pics in my highly disorganised photobucket account and post them up for you to see. :good2:
I managed to find a pic of not mine, but somebody else's fork extensions, which look pretty much the same as the ones ive made. I know some people might not think much of them and would rather spend hundreds on stepped tripple tree's,but if your on a budget, these work great.

Ive found a pic of one of mine, probably still under construction at the time of the photo?

That's the same Idea I had in mind. Replace the top cap with one that screws into the tube and extends past the adjusters.
looks alot cleaner. How much for 2 sets for 2008 GSXR 1000 forks?

Me also :good2:
The ones ive made sit over the tops of the existing forks. They dont go anywhere and stay put once all the parts are bolted together. I was thinking about machining a tube with (example I think?)of an internal diameter of 50-55mm (what ever the forks are?),that slides over the forks when fitted, neatly between the tripple trees (yokes in the UK!!).lol. This way, colour matched to the forks, nobody would know the extensions were there. :good2: However,on an FJ,the fairing would hide things. :good2:
Well the state of Wisconsin just put a stop to my resurrecting the 87.. I had the Vin. checked by a sheriff friend. Before I started. And he said It didn't come back stolen or anything. said the last thing that showed up was when it was shipped to the dealership in brookfield. In late 87. So I started getting the parts. Got everything except the GSXR front wheel. I figured I had better get started with the paperwork. So I called DMV. Got transferred around and finally ended up with the
tittle research department. And she tells me even though t doesn't show that it was "junked" because it was once owned by a junk yard. It can't be retitled at all. Now I have to find a frame with a good title, hopefully cheap.

Bugger!!!
kind of a stupid law, must be to protect the honest ppl, , over here if everything matches, vin , engine ect would no problem
I have a 86 frame no title. It was lost is what I was told .
Just the frame no subframe or lower rails $50 come pick it up.Rolling Meadows il.
I can get the frame # for you first if you like.
You need to sell it to someone (you trust) who lives in a state that don't do that. My state and many others will reg and re title that bike. Then they sell it back to you, it doesn't even need to leave the your garage.

I also have a 84 frame with title but its a compleate bike that I would have to strip and its been sitting in a barn for 8 years.
Not in the best shape it had some mice living in it under the fairing next to the carbs.
$850 takes the whole bike.
I have an 86 frame with registration , can't remember which state. Yours for shipping cost. Not sure how costly it would be as I'm in Canada.

Thanks Darek. Can a Canadian reg be transfered. To US /Wisconsin?

It is a US registered frame. I don't remember the state. I'll try to get down to where its stored today to check it out.
Derek
The registration is from Illinois. Its been in an unheated shed for a couple years and could use a repaint. Has headlight frame attached(may be a little bent), no lower frame rails.

Thanks Derek. I just looked up the distance from you to me 2165 miles. I have never had anything shipped from Canada. I would think it would cost a bunch to ship here (54937) WI?
Hello.... Been away for a bit and just caught this thread.
I would love to see the extenders with pinch bolts if you have any shots of them. The Cycle One Offs do get the job done - same approach that Dixie took - but I don't feel totally secure with the set screw only and no real "grab" on the fork tubes. I wonder if the front doesn't flex a bit because of this less than tight connection. Anywho, I would feel safer with a better set. Getting them threaded into the for top would be awesome but they would have to have all the functionality of the OEM fork top and the underside of those would be a challenge to reproduce. So for me the pinch bolt fork extenders are the best option and hopefully some day I'll have a set!
Regarding the title issue- I find that I get a different result with a different person at the counter sometimes. Bob W is on the right path here, figure out what state is a little more reasonable about these things and seek out a wiling board member to make it happen for you.
Get some pics on here Giant- lets see these beasts!
Cheers all!
Think a little differently and use the stuff the cruiser & chopper dudes have already made (http://www.meancycles.com/store/category.cfm?accCategoryID=2314&manufacturerID=1505) or
Google up a search for something like "Fork Cap Extender" (https://www.google.com.au/search?q=fork+cap+extenders&hl=en&safe=off&tbo=d&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=xIv7UL23MNGhiAfaw4FA&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAA&biw=979&bih=415) and you'll get heaps of good hits.
Here is a picture of a stock fork cap alongside a 1 1/2" extension.

Look at the stock cap. It's hard to see but see the set screw for the rebound adjuster?
i don't see provisions for it in the extended cap.
Perhaps it's as simple as drilling a recess or hole, in the extended cap so you could get the blade and shaft of a screwdriver down there to adjust the rebound adjustment?

Sorry mate, should have pointed out that pic is just an example.
There's plenty of extenders online that have access for suspension adjustment.

Klavdy is correct there are some out there (hollow tubes with male thread section at the bottom and female threads at the top) but I don't think they are for the USD set ups.... The cap design on USD forks does have more going on than the standard type - there are multiple adjustments available at the cap on USD forks. There are thread in units for either the KAYABA or the SHOWA USD forks made by Graves Racing in southern California but they are expensive and they are only for that specific USD fork type (which ever it is was not correct for the R1 only for the GSXR sets). In my mod post I had shown a pic of a set of red fork caps that threaded in and they were custom units made by a machinist for his own bike - he would not take my money to produce another set... Found it:
I have not looked into it lately but I think they are now making thread in extender caps up to 3" long (for racers) designed to fit the newer big piston forks (also either Kayaba or Showa - can't recall). The caps retain all the adjustment capabilities same as the stock units but are longer... The later R1's from (2009 on I think) have the big piston forks and I was considering swapping my fork legs out for these newer units and then finding the thread in caps- none of which would be inexpensive nor easy to find....
tim
I just can't get a grip on how to post pics :flag_of_truce:
Anyway. I was going to use big piston(2009 and up GSXR) for this bike. But all the ones @ dealership that I looked at. The diameter decreases right above the lower clamp of the tripple. So you can't slide the fork down far enough. The cap for the big piston doesen't have the adjusters sticking out of it. It has holes to stick a screwdriver through it. So the cap extended would be simple to make. The only ones I've seen for racers are only 25 mm... if I remember right. I have the 2008 GSXR forks for this bike. So. If I get a day off.(worked 25 of the last 30 12/hr days)I'm going to take the cap off and see if I can remove the adjusters from it . To see how complicated it is.

Did you look into his suggestion of welding a tube onto the caps. And turning them down. I don't think You would have to get them exact. Like he said the upper triple clamp, is a clamp.
If you can take the USD forks to bits, why not extend rods/parts internally? Im sure a friend of mine did this a while back, but it involved a total fork strip down? The extenders on the top of the forks save the work. I definately know my pal shortened a set of ducati monster forks to fit a one off chopper. Im going to ask some questions to those that know,in other words my friend Garry. :good2:
