Title: Installed Randy's oil filter mod
Post by: craigo on January 06, 2013, 04:52:56 PM
Easy as pie, just needed a deep reach thin walled 1" socket, a little blue loc-tite and some white grease. Went in so nice and looks great. :yahoo:

Great customer service from Randy. BTW, got here real fast. Thanks Randy

Ray, you probably already know, but incase you don't Ryco Z411 and Ryco Z148A (or other brand equivalents) are easily obtainable and cheap filters, that suit the spin-on adaptor.   Regards, Pete.

I used a Bosch 3312, spun right on, it's black and it matched the engine. But I'm sure Randy will suggest the WIX filter. Pricey, but the check valve gives it an interesting aspect.

Yup a very nice upgrade. Makes you want to change oil now just because... Looks great also. I run WIX because it's handy and black, but lots of filters will work and a little dab of black bug bomb will do ya :). You wonder why in the heck didn't you do this a long time ago.  :good2:

The spin on oil filter adapter was one of the very first mods that I did after I purchased my bike. For the purpose of availability, (if you need one right now today) I crossed referenced the filter part number and found that the filter is for a 1988 Acura Integra with the 1.8l engine.

Fred,

That was a 1.6l motor, not the 1.8l, because I just did the research....
Any of these filters will work:

Well I went out to the bike this morning to find a puddle of oil under her. It appears to be leaking from the drain bolt. This has never happened before so I have to ask, will replacing the washer between the bolt and oil pan fix this or do I have bigger problems?  :dash2:

Thanks in advance,

CraigO

The washer is a crush washer and should be replaced every oil change. I say should be, but I have used the same washer since I got the bike over 15 years ago with no leaks at the washer. You might be able to tighten it just a little bit more. Use a torque wrench to prevent over tightening and stripping out the threads. If that don't work then decide if you can live with the leak till your next oil change. Or drain the oil into a clean container, put a new washer on and put your new oil back in.

Thanks Mark,

Yep, that's what I was thinking too, that is was just a crush washer issue. But, since I never in all my years came upon this problem, I'd thought I'd ask the experts.  :good:

Thanks again,

Thanks Pete, I went and got 2 K&N black filters, model KN-202 from a place in Sydney off ebay. $17.00 ea, bit pricey but they are black and ready to go on so all good. I ordered a new drain bolt from Randy with my goodies, I didn't check if it comes with a new crush washer or if these are seperate. I have been reusing the same one over and over with no probs so far.....

Might it be oil that is dripping from the chin fairing from when you did your recent oil & filter change?  I have found a few drops of oil under my bike after an oil change--- the next day--- from when I pull the filter housing off and consequently spill oil into my chin fairing and all over the header pipes.

Hopefully just a crush washer. I hate to admit it but the first time I put the spin on filter adapter I got that &**%##$ wire caught under the O ring and it leaked.... Stupid me.. Got a new O ring and reinstalled. Now no problem with the wire forever. I really like the conversion and would recommend it as one of the first things to do. I ordered a few extra crush washers to have on hand, now I hope I can find the things when needed..... With a crush washer in hand you might be able to locate one at NAPA or a discount auto store in a pinch.

It's a fix, just put on a crush washer and she's high and dry. Thanks all for the responses. And I think we all at one time or another pinched that wire under the filter housing. I remove the chin fairing when I change oil so I can clean up in there. It sure gets grimie between the frame rails and the chin fairing.

Thanks again,

CraigO

I broke down and ordered one several weeks back, hope to actually install it in the next couple of days.

Picked up the filters this afternoon, forgot to order them when I bought the adaptor  :shok:

Put me down as another potential oil filter modder.  I ordered the kit last week, can't wait till it's here and I can do an oil change... hmmm Randy, do you have shares in any of the oil companies by any chance?

I bought the CarQuest filters, they're white, they go with my cowling and that's my story and I'm sticking too it.

Back on track - finished work and decided to install the oil filter adapter.

Removed old filter housing assembly -

As I just changed the o-ring, decided to re-use it.

Adapter installed - I did use blue loctite as the bolt went on fine finger tight -

Torqued to 25ft/lbs, easy as can be.

Installed filter

and lower cowl, had to "frankenstein" it a bit....

Here you can see the stitches in the lower cowl....

No leaks on initial testing - looking forward to no snow/better weather for a real test ride.

I did fill the filter as much as possible, prior to installing, and added a small amount to the crankcase to level it back off after the test run.

I'm happy so far, thank's everyone -especially Randy!

The white filter looks cool on your bike and differentiates if from others. What more do you want from a quick modification?

European owners will like to know that Hi-Flow 202 it is the same model. The oil filter list at Randy web is available to US owners, but I can“t obtain any of them in Spain

I had to do the same thing to my lower cowl, as mine broke in the exact same spot as yours..........I'm guessing a prior clutch slave leak while in the hands of the PO was the root cause.

All good, no leaks etc?

I put my oil filter mod on a couple of weeks  ago and have just drained the new oil today to start on Randys Oil Cooler Mod installation. I'm re-using the same oil though, still nice and golden colour,

Yeah, I am loving this mod. Better choice of oil filters than that little POS paper cartridge that goes into the case. No bolts to remove and no chance of pinching that wire under the filter housing.

Plus, it looks great.

No leaks, only issue was it seems to hold more oil -

I passed a couple Harley's at speed and the oil light was on - that always gets my attention!

Added a little oil, all is well.
