:yahoo: Following a coupla PM`s, we`ve got a bit of "Mens Secret business" happening at my Place Sunday january 20th, from say 9am.
Baldy is going ta show us how ta Synchronise X-Rays Carbies using Darran`s gauges (oz.fj- and he`ll be watchin ta make sure thay don`t get scratched), Ribbet has sent up his MKIII Engine Mount removers (tha one that gets`m just before tha Earth begins ta stop spinning on it`s axis) so we can see how that works, Randy has sent us his emulators and springs etc for a fork upgrade demo and all participants get a free sealmating of their forks on site (curtesey of Harvy), and if we get time there`s a bike waiting ta have it`s valves adjusted.
There`ll be some tucker, a TV and plenty of old Bike magazines, and ya can pick up ya Embroidered shirts already ordered (to save postage). Any new Shirt orders will be ready for ya also. For those attending the Rally it might be a good time ta discuss strategies that ensure "the Ashes" gets retained by Qld on March 9th. Hehe he. (I couldn`t post this till after I knew Ribbert had been to the post office)
So who`s gunna be there (so i know how much coffee, bread & snags ta get). - Be great to meet some of the new guys.
Oh yeah, let me know by PM if ya want to address any particular prob on the bike ya might be on - just ta make sure we got all tha right tools to play with.
This sounds great! A few eager hands on deck, some nice tools and we should be able to knock over quite a few jobs that need to be done. Syncing carbs sounds good, not sure when mine were done last, would LOVE to see if these engine mounts are sus as well. I'll leave a couple of the other jobs for home, (oil cooler and spin on filter etc). If I have the parts in time from Randy I'll bring them in case anyone wants to see them.
The Seal Mate therapy on our forks sounds excellent, one of mine is already crying with joy :sarcastic:(Thanks Harv!) Will be taking pics of your fork upgrade Doug, that will help me when its my turn to do 'em.
I may have the new chain by then as well, I don't have a chain tool though.
You're a good man, Doug and it's a beaut thing you've organised.
Hmmm, pretty sure I've got some specialised FJ tools and even some spare parts left over, they could be donated to the cause.
Things like a steering head bearing removal tool,a big arse hex bit thing to hold down the fork tops, some gaskets, bearings and stuff.
Dunno if I'd be in Australia when it's on but the tools etc can be passed to Baldy.
Hmm, I get around to seeing whats there and make a list.

You Ripper Klavdy. Especially need that Big Arse Hex Thing and I think someone said I need some tool ta tighten some thingy inside tha bottom of tha forks. I`ll find Baldy :mail1:
Nice one, that's going to save some work :good2:,
I'll bring my Monkey made fork tool with me just in case..

Xray
the last time your carbies were synced was when Brett did them and took you for a squirt on his bike, to show you what should happen, that was also the day you started going grey, always wondered if it was the ride on the back of Bretts bike that caused that :rofl2:
Bretts off that w/e so trying to talk him into coming as well

Ahhhh, correct Doug it was. Jeezuz you've got me gripping my computer seat now thinking about that little "squirt" down the road as pillion on Bretts Beast. I would go a lot better actually riding it myself, as good a rider as Brett is, that scared the crap outta me. For anyone wondering why, that thing is F A S T, make no mistake about it.
Marsh may have to move a copy of this to another thread, but I thought I`d publish a communication with Ribbert i received via PM that I found particularly informative. (got his consent ta copy here) I had asked him for details on his MKIII Extractor and explained my experience with stripping hardened steel bolts and even nuts. (esp if a rattle gun was used). His answer is logical as usual and the solution is in his attention to detail. (genius IMHO) :-
Yes Doug, MkI stripped, on MkII I welded 2 nuts together and it stripped. Unlike a frozen nut or bolt that just needs to be cracked, these things can fight you all the way.
Because of the frequency with which it will be used I saw no point going to any more trouble than required for a tool that would only get used once or twice, so it's a bit crude but worked brilliantly ,if a bit fiddly to use.
Excuse me if I'm telling you anything here that's obvious or you already know.
1. The head has been turned down on an engineers precision bench grinder to catch the collar but pass through the bush.
2. The socket, I think I used 3/4 AF, puts the load on the bush NOT the crankcase it's housed in.
3. I used an assortment of 1/2" drive sockets, big nuts and washers. Because I couldn't get a fully threaded bolt I did have to remove it a couple of times to add to the stack when I ran out of thread.
4. It's important to make sure whatever you use as spaces have good contact so one doesn't disappear inside the other under load.
5. The long nut and course thread allows the load to spread over a greater surface and less prone to stripping.
6. Make sure a substantial amount of the nut is in contact before loading up too much or you lose the benefit of the long nut.
Because of the loose and multiple nature of the spacers you need to make sure they are all lined up and square and the head of the bolt is centralised and not going to catch the bush when you nip up the tension.
The vice grip marks are from bottoming out the nut on the last bit and being too lazy to add another spacer, at that point it was almost out and I knocked it the rest of the way with a hammer and drift without much effort but then had to loosen the nut.
I would imagine a lot less force would be required if a second set of hands with a brass mallet or drift was hitting (not too hard) the head of the bolt to help break the seal.
My rattle gun did nothing. I had a long length of pipe over my long 1/2" drive socket bar, which I was expecting to be the weak link and break.
I work on old cars and loosening parts that have been slowly joining together for the last 90 years is something I do often, but this was up there with the worst of them. Not being able to use heat made it more difficult.
One option I considered was putting a bolt or piece of rod through the collar and mig weld the protruding end to heat up the bolt and therefore the collar. The expansion and contraction you get from this is one of my favourites, but normally done with an oxy.
The second bike was much easier.
The bolt will be winging its way to you by the end of the day.
Good luck
Noel

The length of the Nut particularly made the penny drop for dimwit me. Can`t wait ta play with it on Jan 20th. Thanks again Noel, Doug
those long nuts, number 5, I have a few of them, they in my case are used in the 1950's victa (yes the lawn mower) outboards that I collect and restore. They take all the strain as the little bugga's are direct drive.
Victa 18's and Victa outboards are almost more fun than an FJ :yahoo:

I too have a stack of number 5s as they appear to be connector nuts for cyclone rods.
I use them to tie houses down, to stop them blowing away.
Let me know if required

No Brett won't be coming has someone over from Perth Wetern Australia!!
Me Sychronise Carbies  :dash2: maybe
Im going to show you how to do the engine mounts :yahoo: as I originally told everyone how to get this done!! David. R perfected it :dance2:
X Ray Harvy and anyone else who want to meet me @ BP Burpengary at 7am on Sunday to ride to Generals place?
XRay bring the spin on adapter, get yourself a filter for it we will fit that as well!!
Oh and Doug we won't be doing any shims on any of the bikes that are ridden to the shed as they have to be cold!! ie not ridden for @ least 24hrs!!
Baldy
Yep, sounds good, ummmm 7.00am?? Wha??. Early to bed Sat nite for me then :morning1:
I was thinking of doing the spin on Filter mod that day as well Doug, but then I have to drop the oil again to do the oil cooler mod at home. (going to do some engine cleaning/painting and retouch the headers while they are off for oil cooler). I'll have to get some oil before the weekend, got the spin on filter. I'm bringing the oil cooler kit etc for anyone that wants to see it as well, :good:
I'm hoping the new chain turns up from England before the weekend,
Ill be there, Unfortunately i will only be able to come in my car because i cant carry anything on my bike but ill be bringing a set of forks for some tender lovin! If anyone is in need of some FJ parts for a 3CV let me know prior and ill dig thru my shed and see if i can help you. I also have a Standard Airfilter Oil filters and brake pads NIB if anyone is interested in them for cost. Also have my first Chin Fairing in Fibreglass brand new for you all to check out and if your interested in one you can place an order with me on the day.
Regards Sean

, are these the bellypan,s you were making yourself,,
Howdy fellow Mansheders, I got my new chain delivered today, picking up a new rear sprocket tomorrow to go with the new front ordered from RPM, so that is one job I would like to do as well on Sunday time permitting. Do you have a grinding implement General and chain riveter handy? I'm just working out what tools I need to bring as well, (don't have a riveter, have a grinder though ).
I'll bring some tools I know I will need for some specific jobs anyway. I always think its more efficient to do maintenance work with more than one set of eyes overlooking the job at hand.
Out of the 11 or so of us spending the day at The Generals, what are the main jobs that everyone wants/needs to do?
I'm hoping to fit my spin on filter kit/sync carbies/fit new chain and sprockets, and learn from Baldy what to do with these damn engine mounts. And help out where needed of course. What doesn't get done will be fine for me to do back home, the oil cooler mod being one of them.
Should be fun.
dam, if i had of known i could of lent you guys a chain breaker, only a breaker and not a riveter as well though, so only half the fun  , also have a chain tensioner, makes fitting the joining link much easier , especially on your own, but you blokes should be fine with a shed full of hands :good2:

Will there be a count of the number of purple thumbs on Monday? :-)
Joking..... Arnie
As I won't be there and am feeling left out and very jealous, I don't think we should encourage this sort of behavior
well this is true, dousnt matter though, the 20th of jan will be The best day for riding, no traffic or animals, all cops taking the day off, and roads have been washed an swept clean,, why would you want to stay in a shed
excellent point locked in a shed with a bunch of smelly men, or out on the FJ cutting a dashing debonair figure attracting attention from every good looking female (of the homo sapien variety) within a hundred miles :good2:  :rofl2:
Yeah yeah yeah, we got a big hammer, 2 pair of Stillsons, a grinder (Somewhwere - I betta check), Underarm soakademia (found it), Somewhere ta hang ya jackets (a fence), Chain breaker (refer item 3) someplace ta spill oil, (refer ta jacket hangar - no termites here ever!) First Aid Kit (Pkt a bandaids) Got some chairs for us students - had a lounge too, till the old girl noticed it miss`n from upstairs - but going to tha Tip today so might find somethin. Weather forcast is fine and a bit warm for tomorra. (could possibly get wet if ya stayed on the Gold Coast, but BOM says perfect as usual within 100klms of me) -- I reck`n we`ll have plenty of wind.
I Bought a hardened Steel Bolt and long nut ta copy Ribberts MK111 engine mount puller. A mate made the thread longer on his lathe (Not sure if that weakens the thread strength?) and got some washers in case we need`m and hoping like hell we got the right socket ta use as spacer thingy. Was settin up a tank but Baldy tells me we use existing tanks on bike to be synchonised - Got fans and plenty of room for FJ pets incl fresh carbon monoxide and your choice of coffee, tea, bangers or ice cold refreshments. ---Now ta read the instructions from Randy re the fork upgrade... might need some more tools. ..Got tha broom handle (Dena won`t know, cause she has ta work this Sunday..Hehehee) and I`m sure there`ll be an axle nut in the carpark :drinks: ... I luv weekends....and sheds....mmmmm
Sounds good Doug. Just out putting the back wheel in and packing some tools etc. I'll bring a grinder just in case :good2:
As a side note, I'll be giving my re-soled Gaernes a test run tomorrow, bloody good boots but the rubber sole perished from lack of use (or age) Mr Minit put a couple of good thick soles on for $99.00, bargain. Meeting Baldy and Harvs? 7.30am at the twin BPs, *yawn*. Have to take it easy with the new shiny back tyre on, can you scuff them up a bit with sandpaper to take the shine off, or is it a case of just let the road do the job?
07:00 at the BP Burpengary, eh?
Hmmm.
Which one, north bound or south bound?
North Klav.
North eh?
Good.

Mmmm, I'm hoping that Harvys Seal Mate thingy possesses magical properties, going on the amount of oil that is leaking from my LH fork leg, I'm gonna need a miracle,
seal mate works pretty well to clean out any crud,, but if the seal has gone like one from my 88 , it wont help at all,, bloody seal had rusted out the spring that lives inside it, and perforated the seal itself, so oil was coming out through the flat part on top of the seal , , mind you the bike had sat four years
so who's going to bed early so they can get up early, who's so excited they can't sleep :yahoo:
I'll try to go to bed early, but seeing as most nights its 1.00am before I hit the sack, it'll be hard. :wacko3:

No purple thumbs yet, but here`s a question. When you`ve taken out the innards of the engine mounts (Cleaned etc cause they were shit - esp one of harvys) Do we also have to remove the outer mount as shown here:

A splendid day was had by all ,first off we , (X-Ray, Stainsy, Baldy & I) met up at the B.P servo, amazingly we were all there before 07:30!

Not only was a beaut workspace cleared and ready to go, there was cuppas and toast laid on.

There was plenty of FJ porn on hand with a few of the boys receiving goodie boxes from Randy.
We even had some time for a bit of tinkering.... Engine mounts were greased, forks were swapped out, spin on filters installed, fork oil changed, fork seals cleaned ,carbs synced +more.
All this and not one spanner turned on our gracious host beloved machines.
A big thank you to Lord Baldy for being the font of FJ knowledge that he is.

Yeah I'm getting to that Klav.! Thanks General for putting on a great day, I was ready to stay over and put in a day working on YOUR bike. But, just shout out and and I'm sure there be some willing hands to help. Great work area you have there, plenty of space, good food/cold drinks, ahhh, we were spoiled. My ride home was one of joy, so smoooottttthhhhhhhh. I was slowing to 100kmh and opening the throttle up to 120, was turbine smooth. I think a combination of the engine mounts/vibranators/carb sync really worked wonders. I still have a nice new chain to put on yet, may improve things even further. I love these sorts of get togethers, jobs I put off at home on my own because they seem "too hard" become much easier with a few people helping.
But yep, good to catch up again, meet some new FJ addicts, I KNOW HOW TO CHECK THE ENGINE MOUNTS NOW, YAHOOOOOOOOO! Thanks Doug, (Baldy). Bring on Bellingen, weeeeeeeeeeee.!

Amongst many things I also learnt ya need a 25mm deep socket for the spin on oil filter conversion (most sets seem to cover 24mm then jump ta 27mm) and also discovered not ta move the suspension around too much after removing the springs and replacing fork oil - Was a proper bastard trying to line up Darran`s "D" shaft.
I`m hoping the guys that were still there when Harvy left can remember his Bon voyage words of wisdom to me as he departed on the trip South. (please chime in to confirm I heard him correctly).
I know it`s suppose ta be secret Men`s business, but thought I should show ya how Baldy lines up his "D" shaft.

  Baldy has snuck up behind Klav, Klav is going WTF??
This was my first get together with some of the south east Queensland mob of FJ owners and I was a bit worried that I would be the only decent bloke in the world that liked owning and riding an FJ. I shouldn't have worried because I found this bunch of blokes to be friendly, welcoming and decent. Okay, so they may not have been as good looking as me or ride motorbikes for a living like me, or enjoy surfing after into their 50's or have a big d***, but we can't all be so lucky. Thanks to The General for arranging this get together, for inviting me along and for providing his man shed and home for our use.
Good on you for coming Stainesy, hopefully we can get out for more rides around the place. I've been ignoring my poor FJ for so long, but after yesterday I'm trying to book weekends off everywhere to get out and about.!
Amongst many things I also learnt ya need a 25mm deep socket for the spin on oil filter conversion (most sets seem to cover 24mm then jump ta 27mm) Yes u were asked to have all the proper tools on hand was a bugga having to look thru all those bits u have squirrelled away!!
and also discovered not ta move the suspension around too much after removing the springs and replacing fork oil - Was a proper bastard trying to line up Darran`s "D" shaft.
Was the easy part to do! :yahoo:

After the trouble I had with a similar set of leathers n the US last yr and Randy's assistance I couldn't bear to se Klav suffer trying to do up his zippers :empathy2:

What an excellent day :yahoo: Thanks to Doug and all the guys ... Have you ever seen ants on a dead roach ?? That was the action in Doug's man cave, spanners flying ,parts ready, plenty of advice & a bit of friendly shit bagging.. I was a bit worried about pulling my bike apart 150 K's from home & having to start work Sunday night but silly me. If anyone hasn't pulled & greased their front engine mounts yet , you are insane :dash1: it has to be done full stop..... I DIDN'T believe it could make that much difference, on hitting 110 on the hi way all vibes dissapeared. UNBELIEVABLE :dance2: on the way up my right hand went to sleep 4 times, on the way home not once. HAPPY DAZ :drinks: If you miss the next offering of a day like this you are truly a MUG. The boys also decided I couldn't ride an FJ every day with the forks on mine so they just proceded to rip mine off in obvious anger and loan me a pair . :good2: OK, so really these guys don't know me from a bar of salts , just bring em back when ya done Horse .. Your Shittin me, ain't ya !!!!! I used to REALY LIKE my FJ now i'm falling in love with the damn thing :wacko3: :wacko3: Is the normal cause I'm starting to have strange thoughts!!! So many mods so short is life..... :hang1: Once again many thanks to Doug and everyone on Sunday for a great day.... :hi:
Heh Heh, gets ya bad eh? I think the best treatment Horse is to go through the list of Randys goodies on offer, grab something you think your FJ would like, and we'll have another day real soon hopefully to do it all again. Mmmmm, Before March, might be pushing it but anythings possible. The General needs some hands around his beast, I still have a chain/sprockets to do, whos game? :wacko2:

Well Friday came round and so did the rain, not to be detered jumped on the bike and trundled off up the road to Dougies place about 50mins up the road, the rain was ok didn't really start till just before I got there.
Spent about 5-6 hrs there working on Dougs bikes doing his front suspension front brakes and engine mounts on No1 bike, then did the engine mounts on No2 bike now the PO must've been an absolute tool because he couldn't get the bushes out he reversed 2 of the bolts and put dob of weld on the end so the bolt didn't come out.
KNob head didn't even tighten the bolts up were pretty much only finger tight , one space need the special tool to get it started then was able to drive it out the 2nd bush practically fell out. All greased and re installed and tensioned correctly, Thanks Harvy :yahoo:
The ride home was a shocker, bucketed down all the way home my normal 45 to 50 min run home took 1hr 45min as some idiot had smashed his car on the Gateway and police had closed it to all traffic, as per usual once passed the closure the traffic returned to normal but was pissed as all the idiots in their tiptops were s busy rubber necking added to my trip home in the rain, and I was saturated when I did finally get home :ireful:
Baldy
With all this engine mount greasing going on recently I am curious to know why nobody seems to think it's worth 5 mins / $5 to put grease nipples in. There is a rebate in the centre of the bush that is ideal for uniform lubricating through a single point.

I agree Noel, nipples are the go. Didn`t want to take on something new with limited tools at hand and heaps of kilometres ta home for the partygoers. Once I`ve nippled my first one I know I`ll regret not having done it earlier.
Can`t get over how a bit of shit bagging and comraderie progressed my FJ education. The objective was more social than functional and surprised at how much mechanical was achieved. I think there are a lot of blokes like me that live in awe of the talent on this forum while yearning ta have a little play for themselves or at least a look see.
Wrapped in my new torque wrench, enjoyed a Brissie catch up by returning the Forks Horse left behind (luckily he didn`t have ta wheelie all the way home!) and pleased Baldy returned for my remedial education.
Lateley I`ve been sending a lot of questions to Randy. Isn`t it great he never sleeps! I`m so pleased he keeps my "Dickhead" status confidential. – many thanks to ya.
Absolutely bucketing down here (and most of the East coast). :yahoo: Those twisties will be clean & tidy with forests of Green for Bellingen Valley in 5 weeks. Looking forward ta inspecting the FJ1200 Aussie race car in the petting area. (Rumour is we`ll have a Bugatti for FJ`s 30th Anniversary Rally in 2014!)
Ummm... storm warnings out, so no Australia day weekend surf today.....Can`t mow tha lawn....guess I`ll have ta mope around tha shed...(He hehee)
ain't life grand, just ordered a right angled thingy for my dremel woohoo :yahoo:
as I explained to the Mrs, you can never have enough stuff for your dremel collection.
Doug, I know you have a hankering for a sidecar and I've seen how much rain you've had up there.
Perhaps the manshed could produce and FJ version of this:

I greased my engine mounts a few days ago and was thinking of your nipple idea while doing it. On the the face of it, a brilliant idea. But now that I've actually done it and know what I'm doing and why, the next time will be very quick and easy. Sure, it won't be as quick and easy as a squirt or two of the grease gun into a grease nipple, but by taking the extra few minutes to unbolt and take the collars out I can inspect them and be sure that they are clean and actually slide and rotate freely.

Checking anything on a bike anytime is a good idea but if they are sufficiently lubricated and the grease is replenished periodically there is no need to check them. Nobody ever removed the kingpins (hardened shaft in a bronze bush) from their car to grease them, they just pumped new grease in. The nipple also guarantees 100% coverage.

Yes it is a good Idea but having seen the condition of some of the sleeves, I'd rather check also as the front bolt is unable to be greased its still a good idea to pull it out and check it and clean any road grime from it. Just my opinion....... I do like your idea the PO of My bike in the US has had nipples placed on the rear suspension which allows for greasing of all the brearings :good2:

I agree with most of what you've written, although I'm a bit sceptical about the nipple guaranteeing 100% coverage. In any case I'd still prefer to check and grease them manually.
I did my motor mounts on the 19/01/2010 and am in the next few days putting in noels nipples
I will be interested to see how the mounts look as I have not looked at them since and I have put on more than a few all weather k's.
For me it makes sense and will make it easier to wack a bit of grease in more often.
The important thing is that you do them in the first place. :dance2:

There's a rebate in the centre of the bush which acts like a mini reservoir and fills first, then like all hydraulics, forces it out to the narrower sections with higher resistance under equal pressure leaving no voids. I re-greased mine recently after about 15k and the old grease was force out uniformly right around the bush and out both ends in similar quantities.
I guess being a mechanic I view things a little differently when it comes to ease of maintenance and unnecessary work. While I do enjoy tinkering with the FJ and find it therapeutic that doesn't extend to needless dismantling if there is a way of avoiding it and I'm not convinced there is a need to visually inspect them if the grease is replenished regularly.
Either way this is not a biggy, as long as they're done. How you choose to get the grease in there doesn't really matter.

Having battered my way back in there this morning I am even more convinced on the nipple idea is the way to go, the mount is in perfect condition with heaps of cleanish grease from the last time I did the job.
To be honest having done one side this morning I am over it and not looking forward to the other side as it is 9.30 in the morning 30 degrees C already and it sucks :flag_of_truce:
If I had put the nipple in last time I would be finished and having breakfast as I would have to have only eased off one nut and pumped in a bit of fresh grease.
Here is the rebate Noel talks about it is quite wide and deep.
