Post by: Alf on December 13, 2012, 02:41:13 PM
Well, in fact it is not a travel, only a riding to the north of the island where I live. I would like to share with you, guys

Beautiful!

¡Muy bueno!

By the way, I don't see a lot of canaries flying around your island. What's up with that???

In fact that birds are named "canaries" because of these are originally from here

Canary Islands come form the Romans that named to the islands that way because there were a lot of cannis (latin = dogs) around here

These islands are named too "Afortunadas" (lucky islands) because of the climate: we´re on December and we have a 23ºC forecast and after a while I´m going to train swimming at the sea (and without special neoprene swimsuit)

Cool picks. Parts of look like the "road to Hana" in Hawaii

In fact a Volcanologist friend of mine that has travelled around the world working for the Tokio University says that Canary Island are very similar to the Hawaiian Islands. The volcanic origin, the climate and the forest are very similar.

He says the bigger difference is that here the girls are in topless on the beach and in Hawaii is banned

After a long discussion we all conclude than we prefer Canary Islands

December 22nd 10.00 am. Typical winter Sunday in Tenerife

I go for a riding in my island. At 25ºC at the sea level, I prepared myself: T-shirt, summer ventilated leather suit, summer gloves & boots and the tankbag with cotton inner gloves, a towel, a pair of sandals and a swimsuit (or not. Near my home there is a nude beach too)

10 min. away from my home after a calm motorway riding, the fun start and I go to the mountains

And after 20 kms. I get the lateral road to the north, tight, slow and with a lot of U curves

After 60 kms of concentrated technical riding I start to go uphill to the Dorsal road of the island

Fast road (compared with the previous one) and with fantastic views to the sides. Time to wear the inner gloves because even still at around 20ºC, the air is cold at this altitude your fingers get freeze with summer gloves only

Objective: the mount Teide, 3.710 m. above the sea level. More impressive due to it is not in a sistem of mountains, directly emerges from the sea

See the lava sea near the mount

And we start the downhill. In 60 kms of spectacular and fast road I go from 2700 m. to the sea level. It is not necessary to say that your brakes and your front suspension must be in excellent shape

And going to the sea level, a fast swim on the sea to relax before coming back home (hence the towel and the sandals. I leave all the things on the bike and nobody touch my helmet, the leather suit or the tankbag)

And at 2 p.m. I arrive home after 230 kms of pure bike riding pleasure, at time to have the main meal with the family and avoid my wife moaning about that I pass all the Sunday with my bike, even although today I´ve been a little more time because the time loosed taking the pics.
Usually I don´t stop in all the morning, like a training for my summer travels

Enjoy the pics

Excellent trip and photos!  As I passed through Mexico and down to Panama, I was always surprised at how cold it can get down there in the mountains.  Everyone always thinks (including myself) that it is just scorching hot all of the time.  Especially in Mexico, I sometimes used all of my gear at night in the mountains and the coldest spot I thought was close to Cabo San Lucas in Baja California.  Had icicles growing off my 5 o´clock shadow. Keep up the good stories.  Think I´ll grab the wife and head down to the beach.

Next month or in February the mountains will get covered in snow. And it is very curious for the visitors being on the beach and seeing the snow mountains

At the horizon is NOT a mountain, is another island

I agree Harvy..... the only real discussion is about size, shape and their affect on my gravity (.)(.)  :good2:

Great pictures Alf....looks like some good tarmac (and scenery) you've got there!

The tarmac is super-abrasive (and hot), hence my problem with destroying front tyres

Rt56 used to be like that.... velcro for motorcyle tires and yes very abrasive.

You are right, it can be a little surreal.  I experienced that in Colombia and in Ecuador.  Have a photo somewhere of a palm tree in Riobamba, Ecuador with a snow-covered Chimborazo (20,564 foot high inactive volcano) in the background.  You never know what you will see when you are on the road.  Safe driving.
