Having travelled extensively in Mexico, I will tell you that this is not abnormal. Mexico is famous for its speed bumps called (topes pronounced in tow-pays). There are a wide variety of them all over Mexico and spring up out of nowhere so quickly. Myself and a group of 5 bikers hit one in the middle of the night doing 140 kph. It was situated in a remote area that was completely black and not marked. I thought I was doing an end over but managed to hang on. A friend with his Harley apehanger lost a spare helmet that was tied to the side and a loaded ElectraGlide lost both speaker covers on the passenger seat. We were lucky to not have wiped out.
In Mexico City, there are a million topes and in just about every small village you will pass has them every 100 feet. I guarantee that if you drive in Mexico, you will eventually hit one at speed and I hope you fare better than this policeman did.

Yep I rember riding in Mexico, saw a sign that said tope and thought to myself whats a tope then bang. OK know I know it's a kick ass speed bump.
The only way to keep from draging my header was to roll on the throttle and lift the front end up.
We did some traveling at night but it was not worth the hassel. In the day time you would hardly see any animals but at night they seemed to all go and stand in the middle of the rode.
You are so right. One night while travelling through Baja California near La Paz, I was going about 140kph into a blind corner and there was a huge cow on the highway. When I passed, all I remember seeing was udders very close. My Mexican friend was following me quite close on his Harley police dresser and I thought I probably startled the cow and he would hit it. I pulled over and a minute later, he pulled over to see what was wrong, he had not even seen the cow at all. We laughed and kept on going until we got to Cabo San Lucas. Driving at night is bad in Mexico and even worse south of there. If you do make a trip down here, plan on not driving at night, it is much safer and a lot more scenic too.
Some of the military bases here use those high and wide bumps. They will pitch you if you go to fast over them. They are even a pain in a car. I guess that's why they use them. On bases they are well marked.
