Title: I live, and I learn..
Post by: Super_v500 on December 07, 2012, 01:59:19 PM
So today, was the day I check all the nuts and bolts, put the tank back on, and go for a ride.  3 hours max workshop time (including teabreaks)

Got there and found this:

Horrified....  I left the tank upside down on the garage floor (been storing it like this for the past few months when I've been taking it on and off) and the petrol has leaked out and destroyed the paint...

It's my own fault, I should have realised, I do know I'll never, ever do it again.  I've hammerited it up for now so I can commute on it in the winter months.

Positives:
I'll never do it again,
it's an anti theft device as it now looks really sh!te
I get to change the colour of the bike and fill the tank dent

All I have to do now is wait for the summer, and paint the whole bike a different shade!

I know this sucks, and you have learned a valuable lesson. but why turn it up side down when the tank is off the bike?
Wouldn't it have gotten scratched easier that way?
I've had mine off several time and always set it right side up on a rug.

Sorry for you loss.

OUCH!

Sorry dude............

Sometimes when I know that I'll have the tank off the bike for awhile, (depending on how much gas is in it) I'll store it propped up on it's nose, leaning up against the side of the garage or something, so that:

A- Gas cannot leak out of the petcock should something go wrong with that, and

B- The fuel level isn't up to where the filler cap is either.........

I usually just drain some into a 6-gallon gas can if it's too full before i take it off.........

Ouch, poor you. Well, at least she'll appreciate a repaint. I did that once also, but not as badly. My tank was ass in the air to keep the petcock off the floor, except the tank was almost full. Usually it's mostly empty for maintenance. A previous color bled through, and the paint was stripped around the fuel cap. Lord, can I swear when the occasion demands it! It's been 'fixed', but... Live and learn, eh?

Yessir, that's a paint reaction!

Now the *BIG* philosophical question is: If left alone in the garage, did it make a noise?

If it did, was it "singing", or more of a throaty "gurgle"??

Bummer, man!

It happened to me too while riding!!

It was a hot day, I filled my tank up too much, and put my tank bag back on....

At the next fuel up I took the tank bag off and some of the paint around the fuel cap came with it. The fuel that overflowed out of the fuel cap was held there under the tank bag and bubbled the paint... %@ยค*@!!!!

I learned the hard way too.  Don't worry about cramming that extra couple litres in the tank .... On a hot day....... with a tankbag covering the fuelcap.......

I only put it upside down due to the previous owner mangling the fuel tap with pliers. If it's not upside down the fuel p!sses out anyway.

Haven't done painting for a while, means now that I can look at all fairing parts that fit, instead of looking for midnight blue.

I'm think White with a black stripe, and perhaps a black powder coated frame....

I learned not to leave the magnetic tank bag on the fj when sitting in the garage on a hot day. yellowed the top of the tank around gas cap. :dash2:
