I am the new owner of a used set of these "Star" bags, most commonly found on airhead bmw's from the 80's i think. These have yamaha emblems which look legit. Anyways, the dude i bought them from forgot to put the key, which was visible in the ebay pics, in the shipping box. They are locked. :dash2: anyone know where to get a spare?
this guy has an interesting solution, and while they are slightly different bags, the geometry is similar enough that it should work

I have those goofy hooped strap mounts on the bottom, might just drill some bar stock. Saturday will be fun in the garage :mail1: :good2:
Christmas came early this year

Just be careful how you mount those panniers.

I will keep that in mind! Going to the hardware store today to get new latches.
I was able to find everything for the draw latch mod at Lowes for 30 bucks including the locks. Heres to no more backpack!

Got em on, seems pretty solid. Now for the next thing...
there is 2" clearance between the top of the exhaust and the bottom of the bag. Maybe 1.5
Roadtrip!!!!! :good2: :yahoo:  :dance2:

I moved the turn signal mounts and flipped them, also had to flip some of the hardware on the racks to get things to line up, but all in all pretty painless and no holes drilled in the subframe
Maybe its the angle but the lock for the seat looks blocked. Is there room for the key?
No, it is blocked, but i have never locked it, also blocks the helmet keeper thingy. I bought a length of slotted steel bar, going to fab up some brackets later. I need to get some saddle time with them like this, to see how they hold up. Got some appreciative comments at a gas station today, people asking what year, dont see them around much anymore and all that.
On both of my fjs, the seat lock automatically when you push the seat down into the latch. The key must be used to open it every time. Are the first gen fjs different?
Derek
No.
They all lock when you put the seat on.
hm, my seat lock is broke, then. Never used it. odd.

Friction straps keep the bags secure and give me peace of mind, dont want to be worrying about em on the highway

Ill be recovering that seat with leather next time i have a free Day
Nice install. A note from the planet "airhead", ('70's-'80's BMW's): never travel with Krausers unlocked, they're good bags, (I have what? - five sets?), but stories of bags popping their lids open, or falling off the racks are legion. Isn't life great without a backpack? :-)

Yeah they lock as soon as you put the seat on . I`ve got a givi rack on my and its a pain getting to the catches but Its not too bad
regarding the seat lock, my latches function, and are hard to get to, but I have never had to use a key to unlock them. I think i almost did once, but a helmet hung from the helmet lock thingy tends to rest on a hot exhaust pipe so i just carry them around or put them on the rearviews.

Well what SHOULD happen is you turn the helmet lock key left to unlock the helmet lock and right to unlock the seat , sounds like yours is broken . when it`s locked you can`t pull the off side (i guess thats near side in the states ..the side with the lock)seat catch open on mine. the neutral position for the key is straight up and down.
Oh well, hope noone steals my 70's shag xs400 seatcover.
