Title: Canadian FJ1200 on Vancouver Island. Bro-in-law also bought an FJ1100
Post by: Scoops FJ on December 01, 2012, 12:14:07 PM
After a 23 yr motorcycle void, it's nice to be back! Courtenay, B.C. 1987 FJ1200. Wasn't initially looking to go as high as the 1200 class, but sure glad I gave the FJ a look. :greeting:
Used to have an '84 Suzuki GS 400 after having dirtbikes since 10 years old (XL75 & TS185). Sold the GS400 in 1989 to buy a 1990 Toyota 4 Runner with intentions of getting another street bike later.....well, here we are, 2012. A little later than I'd hoped!
Asked my wife's brother for a ride up to get the bike after a couple of great test rides. The seller also had an '84 FJ1100 for sale. He's not ordinarily impulsive, but he struck a deal a few days later for the 1100. He's keeping his bike at our place while building a detached garage at his place. Nice to have a built in riding partner!  :drinks:

Great site for all and any FJ owner who wants to obtain the very best from their FJ and find new friends/riding partners... :drinks:

Welcome, I wonder if Noah felt this way when the rain began. Tons of new ones just flooding in to get on the Arc. And Red and White years to boot. I might need to put the Periwinkle colors back on to avoid getting lost in a sea of Red and White...

Welcome Scoops FJ!

Wow, what a great choice--probably my favorite year of FJ.  I am a sucker for the colour combination and those red rims rock! I had one back in the 90's and loved it.  I now have a '93 and am enjoying it tremendously!  I have only been part of this community for a while now but you are in for a treat!  The forum has provided me with a great deal of knowledge and all members are very courteous.  If you need any parts, do not hesitate to order from Randy (RPM). He is a highly regarded member here.  Absolutely fantastic service.

Enjoy,
Dean

Welcome to the group!

I'm surprised it took two test rides for you to make the purchase but either way you made the right decision!

KOokaloo!

Thanks all! I trolled here prior to joining and it's true, it's a friendly forum. I've seen other forums where strings break down into grand battles! :bomb:
I work out of town, so I'll post pics when I get back.

Welcome! Good story. I was just in Vancouver about a month ago--can't imagine putting up with all the rain, haha. Does it rain bad in your part?

Wasn't as cold as I'd thought it'd be though.

Sounds like you guys got the best two years! (Joking, lest I start that argument again, haha.)

Careful about using the word 'troll', as that word tends to mean 'someone who intentionally says stupid things for the purpose of trying to piss others off' in most contexts online.

Great story though! Hoping one day to get my brother into bikes, but riding with my cousin, uncle, and grandfather is already pretty cool. Definitely beats your standard potluck reunion.

For some reason I can't see the pictures, where are they?

Welcome to the group Mike.  We'll have to get together for a ride next summer since you're only an hour away from me.  Nice looking FJ you have there.  Interesting to see a stock 16" front wheel with blue dot front calipers and what appear to be later model rotors.  Are there some adapters to mount the rotors?

Joined the group too Mike.  When I drove Mike to pick-up his new toy, there was a "sister" 1984 fj1100.  Asked if it was for sale, and the next day I was off to get my motocycle licence, and the new toy.  Kevin

Yeah, wowzers! It's a great bike that looks like it's in great condition! Really, begging you here, stick it in the garage and properly store it for a year and get yourself something a little lighter and smaller displacement to learn on!

You're just bound to drop your first bike a few times, better that you get some junky or at least cheaper/less important bike to do that on--also better that it's lighter so that maybe you can catch it during a slow fall.

I'm a member on forums for the XJ series of bikes as well. A guy just had his second low speed wreck this year, his first year riding. He was so happy when he got his XJ700 Maxim-X, because it was almost flawless, a garage queen... And now he's had two little low sides. Even that bike is too heavy/powerful to learn on. He says he had a background in dirt bikes as a kid, as well, which should have helped more, and does help a lot.

Anyways, whatever you decide, congrats on the bike, ride safe, welcome to the club, ride hard. :)

Most excellent  :good2:

welcome to the jungle. Brothers riding fj's is an awesome thing . get yourselves some gear , like a jacket with crash protection and kevlar pants and gloves . no tennis shoes as the ties like to loop around the shifter and you will tip over at a stop. There is a online store for cyclegear that has its own line of products under the bilt name.
affordable gear at decent prices.

you are lucky to have a brother who can ride motorcycles , My brother kept crashing the minibike when we were kids and never developed any coordination , my dad would tell me he was from my mothers side.

ride on and enjoy :drinks:

Better clarify, new licence, new toy, not a new rider.  In process of getting gear, with Joe Rocket hi vis jacket and zox helment already purchased.  Great toy, and yes, very dangerous.  Read this recently, "although a automobile driver may physical see you, their brain may likely not prioritize the motorcycle, as it isn't a car."  This has been true on at least 25% of the "joy rides".  And yes the motorcycle scares me "big time" to give the respect and attention it requires.  Need a chin fairing, and have found NOS one online.

Better check the fitment of a chin fairing with your aftermarket exhaust system.

Jes' lookin' out fer our new bro', Bro!

Ride safe (we know you will).

OK Mike, official joined as I'm now a "contributor".  Buck up "newbie" buddy, did $25USD.  Someone spends a lot of time on these forums for "maintenance, etc."  Just realized I don't have enough pictures of the bike either.  Thanks Steve, was hoping to find one locally just to "dry" fit, to ensure no header issues.  (In fact I might head over to Mike's place when he's at sea (work), just to see if his will fit, and then magically disappear)

Welcome Kevin and Mike.

Mike, I believe we already met at a mutual friend's house, Mark up on Ryan road. Interestingly you both bought the bikes from another friend of mine, Matt in Merville. Its a small world.
