Title: Starter motor replacement

My 84 FJ1100 cranks fair to OK when cold,but very slow when warm. Does that sound like warn brushes? Is starter removal as easy as it looks?

Starter motor removal is pretty easy.  No "gotcha's" that I've found.  :-)
It could easily be the brushes, but just as easily could be a build up of crud and lack of lube.
Once you get the starter out and apart, clean the bushes, clean and separate the commutator leaves, and look at the brushes.  If they're short, replace them they're cheap.  Otherwise, just make sure you put a good smear of grease on the bushes.

Make sure your battery and connections are in good order before replacing the starter motor. At least take the motor apart to see if it worn. Is the starter original? How many miles since the starter was changed or serviced? I have an 86' with 60K+ (original starter) and my warm starting problems have been battery related, not starter. I kill batteries from poor maintenance. I am better now after my 12 step program and simply being pissed at myself for having to buy so many F&#@%n batteries. Try the simple stuff first before assuming the expensive stuff. Rule out battery and connections, then check brushes and starter motor condition. Others will likely chime in with their personal experience and helpful/insightful stuff we are all chock full of.  :empathy3:

My bike started hard when hot (live in flroida) it is always hot, changed the battery, check all my connections.  Battery helped some, but at 50,000 miles, I decided to just put a new starter on the bike.  I picked one up cheap on e-bay.  It made all the difference in the world.  Money well spend as far as I am concerned.

Yes, you can check the brushes and even change things out, but I think I purchase my started for around $90 shipped, and I already had the bike tore down so it was a easy swap, besides I think new brushes were like $45. bucks.  So, why not go with a new starter.  They are all over ebay.
