Title: 2013 Colorado Rally
Post by: aviationfred on November 25, 2012, 05:51:39 PM
Is there any tentative dates for a Colorado Rally for 2013?? I would love to join the West coaster's, but that would be quite a haul from Kansas.

Maybe if we can get enough members to show interest that one will be put on the schedule.

You can also attend the Renegade Rally, Napa was excellent this year and Andy was a terrific host. I would love to ride the roads of Colorado as well....

If there is not a Colorado rally, I might have to come and join you in Northern CA. I have ridden in your neck of the woods, Angeles Crest, Angeles Forest, Ortega Hwy, Hwy 76 to Julian, Up to Big Bear and Lake Arrowhead, Hwy 150 through Ojai, US1 up to Monterey, Hwy G16 through Carmel Valley, My favorite road of all time.

I have never ridden north of Monterey, I may have to put this in my calender this summer.

I had an awesome time this past summer at the Gunnison Rally........Being that it is so close to my Denver home, it would be a piece of cake for me to get to, and would love to see another one next year..........However they seem to happen about once in 3 to 5 years or so............And If I had the choice next year, I will be trying like hell to make it to the West Coast Rally.........Seeing Andy's videos and pictures sure make me want to ride out from here.....and it's certainly doable, but I am also contemplating trailering out to California from here.(in case something happens like this year)

That being said, it is certainly possible to organize one here in Colorado if enough people show interest in attending........... :drinks:

So if we can get a rally going for this year. It would be  the weekend after the WCR again. Thurs June 6- Sun June 9. I have a 1 month sabbatical I could use to go to the WCR first. Then hit the Colorado rally on the way back.

Hi:

I can't totally say what the coming months have in store for me, but I have some interest in attending if another rally can fall into place. I now have my FJ's sorted out and in shape for a long trip.

I've only been to CO for downhill skiing, but from what I've read regarding the riding there, it's great too.

Not sure if anyone else in MN, WI, or other adjacent states would have interest in this rally and would like to ride together, or trailer down.

I am also interested in going to AR this year when the weather warms enough.

The Colorado rally last year was amazing! Great scenery, great riding, and great company what more could you want? Since last years CO rally I've been planning a mandatory rocky mountain road trip this summer.....Alan, If there is enough interest maybe we could organize a weekend warrior route through Gods country. Just thinking about it makes me anxious to ride (considering the heap of money and time I've put into modding the ol' FJ this winter!) Cant wait ride again!!!

I have not seen anything official from Marsh on a 2013 Colorado Rally. From what I have gathered is..... That the Colorado Rally is not held every year. From indication on this thread, I think that there are 6 members or so that would definitely attend, Myself included. The membership and activity may be large enough to warrent an annual Colorado Rally.

Personally I plan on attending 2 rally's this year. I was looking at one that is close by and one that is further away. A repeat Rally at Gunnison is less than 600 miles for me. Perfect for the close Rally. The Fall East Coast Rally will meet the far Rally.

I would like to do the Colorado rally. It would be better for me if it was a little later in the year though, so close together might half to chose one over the other.

The third weekend in July sounds pretty good. I am guessing here, as I have never been to the mountains in Colorado, reservations/space shouldn't be much of an issue. I belong to a couple of other rider forums. I have noticed that July and August are not used much for Rallys.

At this point I guess we need to make a list of members that are strongly interested, then decide on a weekend or week that suits everyones schedule, and finally a location (gunnison again?). We can try an "interested list" as Ive seen done here before. just copy the list and add your name to it... Any thoughts or ideas are more than welcome. gooday! :hi:

I have no dog in this fight as I will not be attending -as much as I'd love to.  But, I did live in CO.  I would recommend something a bit closer to the front range.  Frisco sits right in the middle of Summit country and would make some incredible riding.  Plus you're not far from Breck and Vail as places to eat and people watch.

Alternatively you may want to consider more of a northern centroid, like up by Estes park, maybe the Granby or even the Steamboat Springs area... If you're so far west, you miss a lot of really great riding along the front range.

Just a thought.

I have no experience setting something like this up. But, I will give this a try. I also have never ridden in Colorado. My thoughts are. The 2012 Rally was held in Gunnison. From the photos, videos and written feedback this looks to me to be a good spot to return for this trip.

I have spoke to the Gunnison KOA. For the dates of 18-21 July 2013. Currently they have one of the large cabins with shower and kitchenette, sleeps 5/6 available. We could all share this one???? They also have a few of the medium size cabins available. There are also 2 of the a-frame cabins that sleep 2 available. Everyone that is interested and plans to attend, please state your preference. Reservations need to made ASAP if we want our choices.

For the routes to ride, I can defer to the Colorado members that may attend, or we could ride the routes from last year. Again open to suggestions.

Thanks again for those that have shown interest, and I hope that I am not stepping on Marsh's or Pat's toes.

Fred

Fred the large cabin sounds good to me, then if more than it can hold want to come they can rent smaller cabins, also this gives us a base to operate out of.

I have ridden some of the roads in western Colorado and they are all good, looking at a map almost all the roads west of Denver are scenic byways.

Having a Date and a place for the rally is the first step. We can figure out the route for the rally as it gets closer. This gives time for members and people who know these roads to give there input and we can check for road construction on the proposed routes.

Fred for having never done this you are doing well.

It does not seem like anything was being done with the Colorado rally this year, so I don't think they will mind. If I am wrong please forgive me/us. Having been in a position of leadership, sometimes it is nice when someone else steps in. It's tiring when you half to do everything.

So turns out I have potential interest again... Might be just a bit too late in the summer, late june/early july would have slightly better odds for me. Can't promise anything at this point, much as I'd love to go. But I'm watching the thread.

Not sure if that helps at all.  :scratch_one-s_head:

But if it mattered, I'd go for the all-in-one cabin, or tents. I'm a cheap bastard.

I made a reservation for the large cottage with a shower. Reserved for the nights of the 18th, 19th and 20th. Two other members are welcome to share. The rate for the cottage $109.00 a night. I have already paid for 1 night. Anyone interested in sharing, please let me know. When I get confirmation of cottage roomates I will post that the cottage is full. I recommend contacting the Gunnison KOA very soon to make your reservation. The other cabins may not be available for long. Gunnison KOA phone # 970-641-1358. I spoke with Mike.

My thoughts are, arrive on the 18th. Rides on the 19th and 20th, depart on the 21st.

Fred, thanks for the heads up on the 2013 rally!  If there's a way to post it on the "fj rally info" tab, I'll bet a lot more people will show up.

I can help with some ride suggestions that we've found to be the best in Colorado.  We do a four day ride out of Denver that has awesome twisties and great scenery.  Using Gunnison as a base will work, with an overnight in Durango, for most of that ride.

The 2013 Colorado FJ Rally is 30 days away. With a lot of the country in the 90's and 100 degree temps, a break to moderate temps should make for an enjoyable weekend of riding. For those that are planning on attending and have not already reserved a cabin or tent site. Please contact the Gunnison, CO. KOA campground to reserve your space. Gunnison KOA phone # 970-641-1358. I spoke with Mike.

Also for those that are attending please go the the link below and add your name to the Roll Call list.

If there is anybody else who want's to spend a couple of days in the mountains of Colorado riding some great roads. Speak up, even if it is for just a day. Remember July 18 arrival and ride 19-20 then depart on the 21st. All are welcome, time is running out so come and join the fun.

Back home all is well. Great time in Colorado. Five warnings or close calls with the police but no tickets. Met a fellow FJ rider named Dewey form Montrose. Riding between Gunnison and Montrose we saw another FJ going the other way, a quick turnaround and caught up with him. We all pulled over and talked, he has a nice 89 with custom paint and other mods. He knew about the forum and we invited him to join. Wish more could have joined Fred and I. Looking forward to the next rally and meeting more forum members. Fred is a great fellow and I hope more members are like him.

Five total warnings or close calls. Twice police flashed there lights at us and twice we had close calls, cops were not paying attention to us were should have been pulled over. The last one was just me and I received a written warning for doing sixteen over the limit. I had just slowed down from doing twenty five to thirty over just a few miles before and was just about to pick it back up when a uhp coming the other way got me.

Forks worked well. Randy's emulators, the recommended springs and oil. The back was ok, used the Honda F4I shock, under sprung. Too soft and bottomed a lot. If someone put the time in to it you could make this work well. To install the FZ1 shock need to clearance the top shock mount. Need just about 2mm more clearance. The springs are a direct interchange. Just need some time to work on the swap. This looks very promising. Maybe next week I will have some time to work with it. The first shock I ordered the bottoming bumper was shot to change this you must tear the shock apart. So I ordered a second one took them a week and a half to send it after a complaint. After I get this shock worked out then get back to working on swingarm and wheel swap. Want to ride this some and figure out what to do for setup on the gold valve. FJ ran well and no problems other than the fender. Still need to check the total mileage. About 1600 miles.
