Hello ,
My name is Mauricio, writing from Portugal, 23 years old, and a Computer Science / Health Care final college year student .
I have an old xt 350 that has 130 .000 km ! (80.778255 miles)
it has been my bike since high school, and i will graduate college with it .
it is extremely modified, with better suspension, panniers, top case, fairing, custom seat, rebuild engine, new ellectronics (CDI, Regulator...) .
And a custom paint job .
Really enjoy fabricate parts , and pretty much everything is custom made on this bike .
I really like to travel long distances with it . For example one of my last trips was to LLEIDA ( a spanish city) , it was a 3500km trip on one week !
Normaly i do about 1000 km in a month, from college to home.
the engine on this small bike is indestructible.
I also enjoy doing some offroad with it, for example, the last one i did , was about 180 km off road, non stop .
Sand, mud, forest roads ...
From 8h to 24h non stop .
this was the reason why i bought the 350, it is VERY light (120kg) , enough power (35 HP), and no maintence needed .
why did i subscribe to this forum ??
Next year , in march , i will probably buy a used bike, and i was really into the yamaha fjr1200 .
here in portugal, this bike can cost from 600 € to 2000 € .
i want a bike, that has no maintenance , were i can fabricate most parts , and with wich i can travel around the world ( or just go buy groceries....)
Why the FJ ?
I tried an 2002 FJR 1300 and instantly felt that was the bike for me !
the power, the smoothness , the confort . The ride . UNBELIEVABLE .
The thing is , an used FJR 1300 is 5000 € ++ , and that is too much .
How can i compare an Fj1200 to a FJR 1300 ?
Do you think the Fj1200 is THE bike for me ??
My list of motobikes is quite small :
Yamaha Dt 50- 2 stroke
Yamaha Dt 125 - 2 stroke
Honda xr 125 - 1ºst 4 stroke
Yamaha xt 350
( MAybe a FJ 1200 eheheh ?)
thank you for the pacience !
Mauricio

Welcome Mauricio, if you like performing your own maintenance then you will like the original FJ better. Easy to work on and upgrade. Most of the upgrades for FJRs leans towards touring and long distance riding. Where as the FJ can be modified to improve its sportiness and or touring ability. My stock 86' is now an upgraded 86/88/89/92 YamSuki FJ, and I love it.

The front suspension was rebuilt , and now using thicker oil, 15w it is vastly improved .
On the rear suspension , wellded a valve so taht i can remove or insert pressure, thus raising on lowering the bike .
i have also wellded to the fframe a suport to raise the bike about 5 cm .

Any one that has an xt cant be wrong ! ehehe
My next project will be a 1989 Xt 600z Tenere "3AJ" , the finest tenere ever built . It can put to shame the new model , or any xt .
The torque on the engine its unbelievable , and the handling top notch . plus the tank has 24liters .

Such as viltal mechanical fluids, filters, and such ?
