Title: Broken Shock absorber

Has anyone seen this before ?
I was pulling apart my newly aquired FJ12 to check bearings etc and this is how the shock came out. It appears to have been like that for a while as there is some corrosion where it has cracked. Will be doing the Honda F4 upgrade sooner then I thought. Lucky I didnt ride it like that

Wow!  That's impressive.
I think I'd check that the rear wheel is still round and that the frame isn't damaged at the upper mount for the shock.  Don't forget to carefully examine all the bearings in the suspension too.

Any updates with respect to getting that Honda F4i shock in there?

That's a pretty heavy bracket to be breaking ! I am in the process of adapting an F4i shock into my 1990 FJ. You have to mount the shock upside down on the later FJ's because there is only one side you can weld a clevis bracket to (one side is AL. and the other steel).  In fact this morning I cut that same bracket off my stock FJ shock and tacked it to the F4i shock. As per Arnie's notes I cut the bottom eye slightly less than in half to assist in keeping the heat away from the shock bladder. So far no problem with heat build up with the wire feed. I ended up with 13" center to center. Might not have to adjust the length of the dog bones, that has yet to be determined. Work is still in progress.... Tomorrow I will complete the weld and see what I have to do at the top to mount the shock now that it's upside down.
The best thing to do would be to get an aftermarket shock but the cost is pretty steep for me right now as I am also converting the rear wheel to a 17" using a GSXR 750 rim and associated parts plus I have to buy a new tire........
Back on to your shock I know you will inspect all the connecting parts and swing arm closely. That took a lot of force to crack that bracket. On the older FJ's the F4i shock adapt is easier to do and those F4i shocks are plentiful. I gave 49.00 for mine delivered to my door.
