G'day blokes & blokettes,
Stuart here from Caboolture, Qld, just north of Brisbane. After 10 years off bikes, raising kids, mortgage etc I got back into it with a Guzzi LeMans MKIV. Loved that bike but I needed something I could ride every day and not worry about spitting carbs, dodgy electrics and cranky neighbors when I started it up at 5 am. Those Contis sounded awesome though. I sold it and got a very nice VFR 800, a huge step up in power, handling and reliability ( apart from the rectifier/ alternator problem that I suspect the previous owner knew about ) but it didnt really light my fire. I had to sell that when money was short and was without a bike for a while until my wife could not stand it anymore and told me to buy another bike but it had to be a cheapy. I was looking for something like an old CB350 or Z650 to build a cafe racer but they are asking silly money for anything from the 70's and 80's . I remember seeing a guy at work on a 93 FJ1200 and found out he still had it in his shed. He had a minor bingle. breaking the fairing and front fender and parked it for 3 years. I handed over $800, loaded it up and took it home. The guys at work reckoned I paid too much for it but I knew I had a gem.
The PO only rode it 2 km to work and back each day. I asked him if he had done any long rides and he said " yeah mate, I went out to Ipswich and back once ". A total of about 100km !! The rear brake pads are down to the metal and the fronts are hardly worn at all so that told me what sort of rider he was. He had not done any maintanence on it at all but had also done very low kms. The guy who sold it to him was a Ullyses member and had obviously looked after it. It is basically a very sound bike that is in need of some tlc.
I started stripping it with the aim of getting it back on the road for about $2000 but the revised estimate is $3000. Just dont tell the wife.
So far I have put in new rear wheel bearings, headlight, plugs, battery and have filters, fender and throttle cable on order. It will still need tyres, clutch slave cylinder kit and chain and sprockets. I plan on doing the cbr 600 rear shock conversion and the RPM fork upgrade, lots of degreasing, polishing ang touch up paint. Any one know where I can get a fairing ?
Welcome in Mate.... :good2:

Welcome mate, you bought a bargain,, how bad is the fairing , may be fixable , plastic welding ect,, the come up on eBay on occasions,, any pics of the old girl, Fj not the other half
Welcome Stuart,
I have just picked up a second 1985 FJ, I already have a tidy fairing, but I don't think the 85 one will go on your bike, if it does, you're welcome to it.
Cheers
Derek
Welcome mate, 93' is still new enough to get most plastics new but they are really expensive. Find a good plastic welder or teach yourself. Get it on the road and find out the meaning of Kookaloo.
Welcome to the group!
Good luck on the project. :good2:

Thanks for the welcome. I will be concentrating on the mechanicals for now but if a fairing comes up at the right price I will grab it. It has a big hole near the headlight and lots of broken tabs etc. Thanks for the offer Derek but that model wont fit mine. I might have a go at repairing it later on.

Stuart welcome aboard, I know where there are 3 even the right colour too...... there is a wrecker over on the southside just off Moss Street Slacks Creek, I think the street is called Herbert St he had several late model FJ Fairings.
If the Fairing is not to badly damaged I would recommend Simca who are in Allgas St, or QLD Motorcycle Platic repairers in Evens Rd Salisbury.
Baldy
Welcome to the group. Enjoy your FJ..... :hi:
