Title: Chinese-made gas caps
Post by: 93fj1200 on November 11, 2012, 05:05:32 PM
Has anyone tried one of the Chinese-made gas caps to fix the whistling gas cap problem?  I have seen them on E-bay for $20.

Whistling cap is a happy gas tank, , just remove. The flapper valve in the cap, no more noise , , I've used the caps , work ok , but most don't lock

Are there any negatives with removing the flapper (it lets all your fuel evaporate away or someting!)?  Mine whistles, doesnt really bother me, but it does sometimes make you jump if you go down the garage in the dark and are not expecting it  :wacko3:

I just stuffed a rag in the filler ( lid open ) and gave it a shot of compressed air up the breather at the back corner of the tank, it blew a lot of crap out, hence the rag, and has never whistled since.

I recently removed mine, was having fuel related issues and wanted to make sure that was not a factor (86' gravity feed). Others have had them removed a long time ago, no issues have been reported about having them removed. Some call it singing, but when your FJ is sitting there and noise is comming from the cap, its more like whining or crying  :cray: because its not out on a ride.

Down here in Panama, it is quite hot and it loves to sing....and loud, but only during the day...doesn´t do it at night. Going to try that air blast, seems like that would cause problems if it was blocked.  And no lack of riding down here.  Have put on more than 30,000 kilometers in the last year travelling from Canada to Panama via Mexico.  Getting ready to do my rim changes.  GSX-R in back and FZR up front as well as blue dots.

Just a reminder, the fuel pump-equipped FJs DON'T have an issue with the flappers, typically. My '90 whistles, just about every bike on the showroom floor at the LYS whistles (they put race gas in them, so they can fire them up for a customer. The race gas does NOT leave varnish behind when it evaporates, so they don't have to clean the carbs).... Unless there is a fuel starvation problem, the flapper should be left alone.
I have not heard of any 3rd or 4th gen bikes with a starvation problem. I really hate to see someone doing work that does not need to be done... And to something that could create a safety issue...   :nea:
