Title: carburetor blues
Post by: Goetz on October 22, 2012, 12:26:46 PM
Warming up the bike to go to work, notice a growing puddle of gas under the bike. 3rd carb from the left is pissing out of it's k&n. BTW, I have the best boss ever. gave me the day off to fix it. I figured a stuck float needle. took the carbs off. WTF!!!! carb # 3 has a hole in the float bowl that someone somewhere fixed with rtv silicone. hmm. so now i figure there is rtv in the works gunking it up. I took carb # 4 apart for comparison sake. carb 3 has a bs34 float needle, much smaller than the one on carb 4, but a stock needle valve seat. and the float level was all jacked up. anyways, does anyone have one right hand side carb bowl? Its not leaking anymore but that damn rtv makes me nervous. Can it be welded? Jb welded?

so po swapped one fuel pump needle seat and a vacuum seat , odd behavior some ppl have,,  was the bowl hole a worn through one or had the twit drilled it , for reasons only known to themselves  :scratch_one-s_head:  ,, have you checked for any more of their handy work

im afraid to look is the fuel pump needle the smaller one? the hole is on the filter side, looks like he hit it with something sharp, and then slapped some silicone on both sides, the inside stuff was deteriorating so i scraped it out and cleaned it, the outer layer is holding so far.  :wacko2: has anyone fitted a set of pwk's or other flat slide carbs?

I should have a bowl here for you.

I also have the correct needle & seats (http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=Carb%3AFloatValveG) for your bike as well.

Or if you just need the correct needle (http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=Carb%3AFloatNeedle).

I forgot to mention, when i got the bike, the rear shock had been cut and center stand removed. I installed an f4i shock, no center stand yet. So it leans over quite a bit. Also, i plan to set the float levels to 5mm tbis weekend. We will see. Also...damn carb 3 seems to be missing a jet, maybe pilot, will post pics after teardown tomorrow. In the meantime, heres one of my baby on the parkway at sunrise

no center stand yet.

PM me your address and I'll send you my old one... if you want it of course.  It would lift the bike at a slight angle, but the bent frame may have been a part of that.  It is in VG condition and I have the spring with it.

This shows the round slides. Page 72 shows the gold looking round (Cylinder shapped) slides. Flat slides will simply look...well....Flat.

so, the big float needle is for gravity feed, which i have. I swear, there is no fuel pump on my bike.. if the valves are as jacked up as the carbs its a wonder the thing runs at all. Now, I need to order, what exactly, from our west coast friend? This is my only vehicle. I have use of an alternate for 3 more weeks (old ass f150, long bed, 16mpg) Help!!

If it helps in any way let me add this. I have just installed a set of carbs from a fuel pump FJ jetted for UNIs on my 86 gravity feed FJ. I adapted the 1 into 2, 10 mm fuel line (84 to 87), to 1 into 1, 10 mm to 6 mm, with smaller metering valves. I consulted with Randy and he mentioned that a few others have done this with no real problems. Not tested yet by me but I will be testing tomorrow in the humble hills known as Angels Crest Hwy. I will also get some 75/80 MPH sustained speeds to test the feed rate of the implied reduced flow. Randy knows his stuff so I feel comfortable giving my FJ the WFO test.

San Dimas Mike, up for a visitor????

Okay...I cannot see the needles or e-tube well enough on my cell.

Since you have curved slides you need the 86 1200 kit. That will replace all of the worn parts as well as incorrect parts you are looking at.

Yes that casting hole is supposed to ne on the carb.

Okay, I am home and the photos are a little bigger, but I still cannot see the needle very well. But it does look pretty blunt at the tip which indicates an aftermarket needle.

There is a bleed jet is missing from that carb, is it missing from all of them?

The jet on the other side looks suspect as well. That jet is supposed to be a non-removable jet that is normally recessed into the hole. By the photo you can see the brass jet/fix orifice actually protruding from the center two carbs.

The needles & seats are the same dimensionally with the exclusion of the fuel supply hole, the body & needle are the same. I am not sure what someone did there if one needle is larger than the others. Someone found something from a different carb that would work.

That is the curved slide, shrouded e-tube. It is dirty but still looks to be stock brass.

Get the crabs all torn down and get some good quality & clear photos. I need to be able to see that fixed orifice jet that is protruding and see if I can determine why.

ok, got them totally apart. Fuel T fitting and drain o rings are hosed as expected, but the carbs arent all that dirty inside. which is good. Now just waiting on the mailman i guess.
Randy, are those pics enough? Only the one carb is missing the pilot jet, the rest of them are there.

That is not a pilot jet thats missing its an idle air jet.It adjusts the amount of air in the Air fuel mix.
As far as the the jets sticking up out of the carbs thats not normal they are usually pressed in fairly deep I wonder if they are still in there and they have tried to add a seccond restrictor.Andy might know  :pardon:

Yeah, they narrow down to a tiny, tiny hole. I dont think there is a problem with them where they are, really. Wont know untill i cang get the carbs back to a stock config and see how she runs.

Dynojet (Stage 3), uses a "main air corrector" - figure C.  it's probably glued in if they followed the instructions

I love waiting for parts, lets me get other things done, like bleeding the brakes and clutch. My clutch fluid looked like grey death. got it mostly clear, but im afraid it needs a rebuild. Probably ran 6 ounces of fluid trough it and still bubbles and murk coming up.
