Title: Hello from indiana!
Post by: minitruckeratheart on October 20, 2012, 05:14:08 PM
new 85 fj 1100 owner here, i was lurking for about a week before i bought it to find some common problems. But seeing as how you have to be a member to use the search function..... had to wait until i bought the bike before i signed up... my luck i would a signed up and he would sold the bike before i bought it and i would be a member here for nothing... all that aside. proud new owner! it needs some work. no air box or filters,no gas tank cap, needs filter pods, starter solenoid, and the carbs need some serious attention. BUT IT RUNS! lol i rode today. got it to idle... the PO couldnt even get it to idle... i think it needs a new choke cable as well. it is frozen open... hard to start cold. also after a rev it wants to idle around 2500 3000 before slowly dropping back to 1000. and sometimes you dont even have to hit the throttle for it to raise to 2k! well i figure a solenoid and carbs cleaned and filter pods r the first things its getting... aside from stripping some MORE fairing from it. its already missing some and i figure ill just streetfighter it out. the tac is the only gauge that works aside from the neutral light. lol so new head light and tac proly in its future as well... i bought the bike as a cheap project to keep my hands out of my daily driver diesel truck... i get the itch to play with something and i would rather it not be what i need to drive!lol well there is my 20 min rant. ill post some pics of the bike.

no she is black and red rattle can paint!  :shout:  :dash2: PO to the guy i got it from really did a number on this bike. but i got it kinda cheap, for what it is. Its the largest RUNNING bike i have ever paid less than a grand for. some light maintenance maybe more like heavy, and i might get to ride her before the snow falls. then this winter, proly f4i rear shock new head light and turns, still debating on the front end to use. i was thinking of putting R1 front end on it and keeping it clean with just a head light and tac. and the rear end well its up in the air for a vfr sssa or a R1 rear end swing arm shock. i was also thinking since nothing sits under the seats but the tool  box hole R1 rear sub frame and fairing and seat. i dunno, cash and time will permit how what goes on and when. first things first. get it running and change the nasty oil!

and upon further price shopping it would seem it would be way cheaper to use a r6 rear subframe and fairing and seat over the r1... way cheaper...

Ok well first off, the pink dont control me. there is way to much out there to let one control you. that being said, the only pink on any car truck or bike in my house hold will be the womans. we are gonna paint her 300sd pink this spring when it warms up enough for me to ride the bike on a regular and she can drive my truck. now if i do buy her a bike, proly a ninja 250 or some thing along those lines, it will (knowing her) be pink. side note was thinking about a buell blast just cause she keeps telling me the only real bike is a harley... haha ill show her shes never ridden a blast...lol of corse she has never ridden a bike herself so it will all be new for her. now all that aside

fiddling with the bike today. pulled the carbs, WOW they were bad. the first carb i pulled the bowl off of the jet fell out..... and where the fuel comes in to the needle for the float, so nasty you couldnt see the groove where the fuel came in!!! I dont know how this thing ran! one float was stuck a jet or two were clogged. anyways got them cleaned and it wants to idle with out popping. and it seems to run alot better then it did, but still having problems returning to idle after you give it throttle. it very slowly returns to 1k. oh the choke piece on the handle bars is broke... so im just going to buy a pull choke cable for a mower and rig it to the bike. (im cheap) pulled some cracked and poorly painted fairing and the fenders off of the bike to clean it up a little. oh we cleaned the spark plugs aswell they were burnt like running lean very lean burnt. oh and just found this after we got it to really open up, i think i blew a weld of the oil plug because it is now spewing oil out of a small hole in the oil drain plug... looks like there are two spot welds on it and under them its shooting oil when its running... gosh this is way more then i thought it was gonna be... if i can get this thing running reliably for a couple hundred bucks ill be happy but as of now its looking like its gonna take more then i thought.....

here are some pics of the bike after the fairing is off well the front is still there cause i need the head light, but most of the rest is gone both fenders front was broken in half anyways. and a pic of the oil drain plug.

and the oil plug which i just ordered from the UK for 7 bucks with shipping. oh and i guess it needed an oil change anyways...lol ill seafoam the crank case like i do on my cars and trucks. maybe it will help keep it clean like it does my diesel!

oh i really need to do something about the turn lights as well, i dont like the goofy signals sticking out like that, maybe get some cheap flush mounts or just bob the arms that extend the lights out... ill poly try n bob them first, its free!

You ordered a drain plug from the UK? That is a good price, is that a O.E. plug or aftermarket?

I also sell the oil plug gasket (http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=Engine%3ADPG).

The FJ does not have points, so what exactly are you talking about?

In case you were not aware, I am right here in the US, www.RPMracingCa.com

Sorry you weren't able to find me Marsh and I are working on that; but know you have.

There is a crankshaft seal under the cover, but not a gasket; Crank Seal (http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=Engine%3ACrankshaftSeal)

I also have the cover gasket as well, but just realized I have not added it to my inventory. It will be online tonight.

I also have replacement stainless steel screws for the cover in either button head (http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=M%2FC%3AButton) or taper head (http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=M%2FC%3ATaper).

try opening your mixture screws to get that idle to come on down quicker.... slow to drop is too lean..... dropping below the set idle then recovering is too rich.

thanks for the help so far guys! i hope to get this things running well enough to really ride it once before the snow hits. i mean i have rode it around a lil but i wanna feel this experience of kookaloo. its pretty fast so far but i think once its tuned in and lined out ill be pretty happy with it. this is my first BIG BORE, and so far even running rough its pretty impressive. its been too long to compare to the r1 or my cusins fire blade which are the only big bore bikes i have riden well my ex brother in laws cagiva it was a touring bike, not a rocket, more like the FJ but again its been years since i have rode it either. hope to do some real work on it and get a good working knowledge of the bike and maybe contribute to the forum.

First I will cover proper FJowner's forum unwritten rules. Your first post should be an introduction in the introduction section of said forum. Violating that unwritten and un-find-able rule is a violation... Punishment is a stern and not so binding "Get your ass over and properly introduce yourself"!!!!

Second, Punctuate!!! Power Ranger is capitalized as in a proper noun. Respect the Red....

Third, owning an ambulance colored FJ will get you points, repainting with colors other than proper Red and White/Silver will only earn half that.

Forth, asking for my custom made monkey fork cap tool requires a donation to FJowners in the last 6 months.... Then you pay shipping... While supplies last, 4 left...

Why do you need new fork springs???? Did you break them??? If you did then we need to hear the story....  (popcorn)

you could also use the rear wheel nut and a wrench, , or as I use a 27mm nut welded to a 1/2" drive socket,, but a monkey ranger tool would be best, , break open that wallet  :good2:

Forth, asking for my custom made monkey fork cap tool requires a donation to FJowners in the last 6 months.... Then you pay shipping... While supplies last, 4 left...

Why do you need new fork springs???? Did you break them??? If you did then we need to hear the story....  (popcorn)

Hence fourth, those criticising punctuation should check spelling.

hello power ranger. Not so good on computers, better on the bike. I just joined and have a question for you or anyone that can help. Just bought a mint 86 1200 my fork springs need changing have race tech springs what tool do you use to remove fork caps. any help will be appreciated thanks

Thread hijack sorry. FJ Monkey how mush do you think the shipping would be to V0E1E0 in British Columbia Canada for your top notch fork cap tool? I would have sent you an email but my server won't let me without setting up abunch of stuff. I am pretty computer illiterate and have to get my daughter to do these things for me. Thanks Big R.

so, is it red ranger or ambulance? im confused... i think mine is gonna be streetfighter... so it dont really matter but still. oh and i guess you havent seen the ambulances around here. the new ones we have are black and red. so if i did the frame in red and the rest in black i would look like one on my local ambulances. so ha

oh and hey monkey, do i need one of those tools to take my forks off? i plan on a whole front end swap before i go messing with the stock front end. it doesnt leak or sag or anything so i think it should be fine til i buy a new front end.

The fork tool is used to remove the top caps only, you can take the fork legs out with the caps in place. You can make your own tool as many have already done with the right size bolt. After rebuilding my forks and installing the RPM valves this simple tool came to mind. I had some laser cut at work in SST. I figured that I could help Marsh and the FJowner's site by giving away the extras to members that have donated in the last 6 months. I just need the cost of shipping covered so I don't lose money in the deal.

FYI, the ambulance refers to the Red and White FJs, the Red Power Ranger is in reference to my riding gear and one of the many ways we like dish out crap and stir up shit around here.

So, how is Indiana this time of year?

INDIANA SUCKS ALL TIMES OF THE YEAR! if you dont like the weather wait 5 mins.... were right dead center of the US literally 7th and walbash is the Cross roads of America or so it used to be. so we get it all. i was riding the bike just two days ago now its cold and wet... next week it will be in the 70s sunny for about a day or two then it will be too cold to be out side... this place is weird. you get all forms of weather all the time. Our riding season is different every year longer or shorter, or too much rain or like this year no rain all summer. anyways indiana sucks balls. big fat floppy donkey balls... nothing here but meth, trains, potholes, bars and colleges.

Continued fork cap tool hijack: I'm sure others have noticed, but if you're looking for a fork cap tool: on my 89 the rear axle nut worked great with a big socket for the fork cap... I wondered to myself if yamaha engineers did that on purpose when I discovered that, haha.
hijack over

whacha think? i like how its tucked up closer to the bike. i did away with the bracket it was on and think i will use it for the front since they are bent and broken off. they are bolted thru a fairing bolt hole. fit nicely.
ill do the other one in a bit, just wanted to see how it looked.
