Title: What blue dot calipers will fit a non-ABS 1993 FJ1200?
Post by: 93fj1200 on October 06, 2012, 09:05:25 AM
I have been readin through the library and canĀ“t seem to find the right information I am looking for.  What blue dot calipers or the gold ones will fit a non-ABS 1993?  What bikes front brakes can be used? Also are all FJR clutch and brake master cylinders interchangeable with the later FJs? Thanks.

Blue/gold dots, yes they will bolt right up.
FJR master cylinder (m/c) will bolt right up however it is a 15mm m/c, just a hair under your existing 5/8" m/c.
For better brake modulation and feel I would recommend a 14mm m/c from a FZR or many other models which use a 14mm piston.

Hope this helps.  Pat

Sorry, I missed the word "what" in your question.
I have the 2001 YZF R-1 calipers on my bikes. Going by memory, any blue or gold dot calipers will work as long as they are non-radial mount calipers. I recall Jon Cain mentioning that the latter years of the calipers have lighter weight pistons.

I don't recall the year the YZF R-1 went to radial mounted calipers, 2005?

The YZF-600 calipers will work.  They have the external crossover line and are blue dots, as well.

I used the m/c off an 03 fjr on my 92fj, it's 14mm and bolts right on, similar look to the coffin style m/c that was there.

Also in theme with 93fj1200s' question, if the clutch m/c on my 92 is 5/8 which is about 15mm does anyone know how a 14mm fjr clutch m/c would affect clutch performance? Or is there no such thing as a 14mm clutch m/c?

Hey Andrew, are you sure the your FJR brake m/c is 14mm?
/edit/ I looked up the part's listing and I see that the FJR changed m/c's starting in 2004 and I see your '03 m/c is shared with the FZ-1 so it very may well be a 14 mm... Good to know.

Hi Pat yes it's 14mm. I phoned Yamaha Canada and was told that the m/c was infact 14mm. Works beautifully
Cheers
Andrew
Now about that clutch m/c?

to answer you clutch mc , ooooh yes the 14 mm one makes for a lighter clutch , much nicer in traffic ,, shouldn't make much difference what one you use, most bikes use nissin ones , I used a zzr1100 one, although some bike wreckers don't know what a 5/8 14mm ect mc is, have had to educate a few

Usually but not always, the size is cast on the underside of the m/cylinder. A 14mm m/c will have the number "14" and imperial size m/c's will have a fraction cast on the body. Unfortunately this is not always the case.    Pete.

FJR m/c is one mod i rate very highly.  Did it on my 93 and what a fantastic difference.  Have attached the original thread.
