Title: Stock Chain Size
Post by: cadmanmadman on August 17, 2009, 01:23:29 PM
Thats right, if its an o-ring chain once those O-rings dry and crack its shot. I remember I used a particularly agressive solvent cleaning a dirtbike chain and destroyed what I believe was a perfectly good o-ring chain. Whatever it was it was not compatible w/ Buna N rubber.

Hey, BTW: somebody above said: Personally, I would start doing so regardless and update to a modern 530 chain and sprocket set up......Are you refering to some sort of upgrade? Is the stock chain a smaller chain? Where do you get compatible sprockets?

The 530 is smaller and lighter, but as strong if not stronger than oem.  As chain technology improved they moved away from the larger chains.  The larger chain is still available, but only re comended for high horsepower, over 200hp, and on drag bikes.  Should be easy to change, I think any dealer can set you up, just make sure you get new maching sprockets.

Later... :bye2:

Not sure what you're talknig about.  530 is the stock chain size for the FJ, No conversion is required

Ok, this article says different  http://www.fjclub.dk/galleri/test/cycle-review-89.htm (http://www.fjclub.dk/galleri/test/cycle-review-89.htm)  630 were used on the 1 liter and up bikes back in the day.  But, I could be wrong, wouldn't be the 1st time.

You could probably get away with a 520, but I would not recomend it.

Higbonzo is wrong.  530 was the OEM size on all years of FJ1100-FJ1200.
I did have an '81 XV1000 that used a 630 chain, completely enclosed and constantly lubricated with a litre of grease.  Worked great, stayed clean, and required very little adjustment since almost no wear.  But it was heavy.

Cheers,
Arnie
