Title: Hosting/server problems?
Post by: andyb on September 26, 2012, 08:54:22 AM
Up and down a bunch, some 404's and then what looked like a message filler page from the host.

I just set our Fourm up with http://www.cloudflare.com/ (http://www.cloudflare.com/)

This should help the site load A LOT faster for our non-US users and cut down on our spam and our bandwidth usage - which should hopefully eliminate these server issues we have seen lately.  I look forward to reviewing the usage stats tomorrow and checking out the difference.  They also cache pages so that even if the site is down sporadically for a few seconds here and there it should still load up and that hiccup will be transparent to the end user.  Keeping my fingers crossed!

Also - everyone - please continue to let me know if you are experiencing any issues.

Often today I have been getting a very basic page loading up (ie no formatting and plain text on a white background).  Refreshing seems to bring it back.  FYI

I have been getting "500" errors all day.

And the search function is all jacked...

Just type in "renegade 2012" and you will never find the info regarding the upcoming rally. I went in seven (7) pages and was still not able to find the topic I was looking for.

I now find it faster to find a member that has already posted in a specific topic, then go to their most recent posts and find the topic I am looking for.

Right here answering all kinds of questions...

I know it has been having issues for some time, but I figured I would put down an example to let Marsh try it and possibly lead to the fix to the problem.

It is much more beneficial to try and be a part of the solution than just complain about the problem. :good2:

I just made some changes to the Search Function - and next week I will work on it some more - I just learned about a few other things I can do to optimize it.  Anyway - try it again - this time check the box that says "Search in topic subjects only" - BAM - first result!!   :good2:

I will have to start going to the search tab then. I have always just used the box next to the "news" tab to type in my search criteria and it always worked well.

I will give the search tab a try, but hopefully you can "adjust" the search of the box at the top of every page.

Thanks, Randy - RPM

Since the change to the new server I now cannot view the website via my cell phone. I get an error message from Cloudflare telling me, "website is offline".

It gives me a blue button to ""retry for a live version of this site" but when clicked it give me the same error message.

I am using sprint as my cell provider on my android phone with Google as the web host (I believe).

I have tried to shut the phone completely down several times and retyping the web address to confirm it is correct.

If I cannot read it from my phone, I will not be able to view the website until I get off work on Thursday morning.

If you send me a message or PM me and do not here back from me, send me an email; randy@rpmracingca.com

Any suggestions to possibly resolve this issue?

Randy, that's what I was getting this am on my desktop.

I just tried it on my Android phone and tablet, and it worked on them at least as well as it ever did.  YMMV.       :unknown:

Cell has been for three days. When I shut the phone completely down, I do get it do come up it is a cached page from September 28, 2012, 12:36:42 PM. When I try and refresh it goes back to the error page.

It has been working intermittently from the shop as well, but at least I can see a little bit.

Concerning search... I don't ever rely on Forum Search for any forum. Better to just go to Google and add "site:fjowners.com" (without quotes) and then put a space and add in whatever it is you want to search. Google will then search only on that site.

Thanks guys.  Please keep reporting here if the website is still doing going down for you guys.  I'm trying a few changes and tweaks in hoping I can get this Cloudflare service working properly.  If it keeps doing this I'm going to pull it and get the hosting company to move us over to a new server.

If it were to work properly - the Cloudflare thing would be awesome for us - that is why I ask you to be patient with me while I keep trying to make it work...

For what it's worth Marsh, I have this site open on my work laptop all day 7am to 4pm for about the last year now, and I've noticed not a single one of the service interuptions others have reported - I know I'm clocking in from NZ, but unless it's just dumb luck you'd think I'd have noticed at least 1 or 2 drop-outs..

Just thought I'd let you know..

Keep up the good work! We all really appreciate the valuable knowledge this site gives to all it's members..

Cheers,

James

Marsh,

I got the same error page throughout last night and early morning hours. I checked again about 4:30 this morning and the error page again came up. I again pushed the blue button to "retry for live site" button and it came up live.

It has now worked throughout the early morning hours and now that I am awake for the day it is still working on my phone. I will keep you posted if I have anymore issues on the cell or shop.

Marsh,

Since last Thursday, 27-Sept, I have not seen any fault or problem with the site.  Log-in, and use of the various features has been quick and right.  I have not tried the "search" function.
This is on my W7 desktop box only.  I haven't tried on my phone.
