Title: which model of FJ1200
Post by: ossylad on September 22, 2012, 11:40:39 AM
a bit confused..... i have a 1991 FJ1200 ABS. i  thought i had a 3XW model, but i was in the yamaha dealer the other day trying to buy those little rubber grommets that hold the side panels on and the guy there was adamant i couldnt have a 3XW as they didnt start until 1992. i had thought that ABS was introduced on 3XW models from 1991? can anyone tell me how to definitively tell what ive got?  cheers    ian

I found this info on Wikipedia. It says that the ABS is an option. From my experience, if the bike has ABS it will have the ABS right below the FJ1200 on the side panels. Also the front rim is different for the ABS models.

In 1986 Yamaha decided to upgrade the FJ1100 by increasing the engine displacement slightly and adding upgraded suspension and other components. The result was the FJ1200. The peak power output was raised slightly to 130 bhp (97 kW) from the FJ100s 125 bhp (93 kW),[citation needed] the FJ1200 had more low- to mid-range torque. The FJ1200 was produced in three main successive versions (1TX, 3CV and 3XW) each updated version benefitting from improvements to bodywork, front and rear suspension components, and the addition of an optional ABS-equipped version (FJ1200A) from 1991 until 1996, when Yamaha discontinued the FJ1200 in the United Kingdom. The model was discontinued in the United States in 1993. Market competitors during its production years included the BMW K100RS, Suzuki's 1100 Katana and Kawasaki's Ninja ZX-10.[1]

Look at the hub of the front rim

Hope this clears things up with your question.

I don't know about the UK but in USA abs models were 92-93.  Also what are your colors this can help identify your year and remember the bike can be made in 91 but be a 92 model year. VIN number tell the whole story. Hope this helps?

hi all.... thanks for your replies to my question. i think my FJ must be the FJ1200A. it was first registered in 1991 and has ABS and the fairing is the later one with the revised headlight (not the squarish one as in earlier models). whereabouts is the frame number? does it say 3xw 3CV ETC as part of that? also, can someone tell me how to post a photo on here, ive tried to do that but cant work out how!!  help!  cheers ian

VIN is on the top frame tube, about 3 or so inches to the right of the steering head.

To post a pic, it needs to be hosted on a site such as photbucket or picassa, etc., and then linked to in a post. There are instructions on here somewhere...

There is a sticker just above the oil cooler with the VIN number on it. Hope this helps.
