I would like to know what people think would be a normal amount of kilometers or miles received on a tank of gas, with or without the reserve or until completely out of gas.
My 1993 is getting about 230-250kms (140-155mpg) on a tank of gas but nothing has ever been done to the carbs since new. I was having some diaphragm problems with the carbs but I coated them with a tube of glue-rubber compound which seems to be working fine until I receive new carbs from Randy at RPM Racing.
Interested to know what mileage I should get with the new carbs also. Thanks. Cudos to Randy!!
I have been tracking my MPG on my stock 86', I am averaging 50 MPG with a mix of riding flat out 80/100 MPH and 45/65 MPH in the twisties. MoparMan Steve called Bullshit when I made this claim during a ride we were on. So we filled up and rode the hills. I road as hard and fast as he was, when we filled up he witnessed the truth to my claim. Other members are also getting similar mileage with mostly stock bikes. Pipes, jetting, larger engines, gearing takes its toll on MPG. Let us know if you see any improvement with your newly cleaned carbs.....
I'm getting 150-160 miles to empty, just short of going on reserve.
Carbs have been rejetted by Randy@RPM and the bike has Delkevic slip-ons and 18/39 sprockets...and a madman sitting in the saddle! LOL!

I guess I need to keep the apples to apples comparison, I get 180 miles on a tank (no red light yet) before I am looking for a fill up station.... Guess I could push it a little more....
I recently went 212 miles with half on the highway and the other half commuting 10 miles round trip to work on city streets. Filled the tank to the brim at 5.1 gallons. I have only had the bike for 4 1/2 months, I do not presently know what size sprockets I have. I am pretty sure the carbs could use a good adjustment and synced.

I have had my '89 FJ since 2003. I have gotten a low of 35 MPG, riding hard, but I usually get 50-51 MPG (US gallon). I've only gone over 200 without filling up once. I've never seen the fuel light and have never knowingly used reserve.. MPG to MPG is apples to apples...
Anson
At about 250kms my fuel light starts to glow.
At about 300kms I need to switch to "reserve"
I feel safe waiting till 350kms to fuel
I once went 400kms and ran completely out of fuel. This was gentle cruise staying on or below 100kph for most of the ride.
Arnie
I check it every time I fill up. 43-48 MPG.
17 / 38 sprockets.

i'm getting that with the FCR39 Keihins and a 1349cc big block... and I'm still way rich in places. You should get better I think. Randy have any ideas?

Thanks everybody for answering about my mileage question. From my experience with my late 70´s Camaros, I have taken out 180 horsepower 350 which never got over 15 mpg, installed a 300 horsepower crate motor, played with the timing & carb adjustments, I reached 21 mpg. When your motor is running at its highest efficiency, you will get the best performance and better mileage as well. FJMonkey is right in saying what is possible with the proper parts and settings. I would love to know what jets, carb adjustments, timing, etc. FJMonkey has done to reach that.

I am the second owner, I have as far as I know a completely stock engine and carb set up. Stock air box with K&N foam filter, stock ignition etc... I have made other changes to improve my 86', wheels, forks, HID, fork brace, nothing that would impact mileage very much. The gearing is near stock, the wheel changes, though 17" and wider, are also lower profile and damn near the original outer diameter. The plugs looked good last time I changed them a few years ago. I have Kerker slip-ons that might alter my MPG once I get them cleaned up and installed. Also wanting to install the UNI pods and that will require some jetting changes.
Yesterday I got the best MPG ever. I went a little over 40 miles with out using any fuel at all. The flatbed we were riding on probably did not get the best MPG..... But that is a different story....

This could be very bad? Is everything OK?

Just read the other threat. Hope you get home ok and things sorted out soon.
Kurt
I used to regularly go 200 before reserve, then I added the pods and cans.
Yesterday, I used 5.35 gallons on 194 miles of rally riding.
pods/ jetting, F1r cans, 18/40 gearing.

Got home, hanging my head in shame. With the dead battery and all it started right up once it was home... Go figure... Took another ride today to get more info on what the hell is going on ... Kind of sure it is the petcock as it seems to be a fuel delivery issue...
I need to fit smaller jets i think... i am getting 150miles per tank (not hit reserve) which I guess is the low 30s. Cant remember the size of the jets i fitted possibly 117.5? I remember going for the largest jets i could get
Spec: Neta exhausts, modified airbox, K&N filter, new plugs, fresh oil, carbs stripped and rebuilt with new needle valve etc, float height correct
I want to do some long distance touring, I dont mind losing some bhp in exchange for MPG... any suggestions? 200miles per tank (inc reserve) would be ok

I get around 33 MPG. In EU that's 7 L/100 km.

Hi Russ - I get 200 miles per tank from my '89 3CV 1200. I run standard carbs/jets, K &N air filter, Remus 4 into 1 (road legal/EU stamped) exhaust and NGK Iriduim spark plugs. But the biggest difference to tank range on longer motorway/touring type journeys came through changing my front and rear sprockets, from 17 teeth on the front and 40 teeth on the rear, to 18 teeth on the front and 38 teeth on the rear.
That drop in rpm's at cruising speed in top gear seems to be the biggest factor in getting better mileage. Calculating fuel consumption on tours and longer journeys at "sensible" speeds (i.e. Not thrashing it, but not pottering either - steady 80/85 on the autobahn etc) I always seem to end up at between around 47mpg and 52 mpg, so I'd guess I'm averaging somewhere around 50 mpg overall.
On my '86 1TX 1200 on standard gearing I was lucky to get much more than 165 miles before I was worried about running out of fuel.

Agree with Arnie, when I first started riding the FJ I got 235kms at reserve. After a ride to a Rally with Arnie I realised it was crap. I now get great power and economy even with a few drags but mostly at speed limit. Funny but with the webcams I not only get more power but better economy than my standard FJ (300-std to 320Kms -webcams before reserve)
The best I've ever gotten on a full tank is 59mpg. I used to regularly go over 200 miles on a tank before looking for a gas station. Now I top out at around 50 and refill no later than 200.
