anybody used or know if these are any good , or better off buying the shift spring from randy
the factory pro kit was one of the first things I did, has worked well for over 8 years.

I believe Randy has the same parts in his kit. I have his kit and it works well... very positive shifts with slightest nudge on shifter.

I have the Factory Pro shift kit and it works great very positive shifting and strongly recommend this but today I would buy Randy's kit. I installed this back in 95 and haven't had any problems with it. Hope this helps.

apparently there are 2 versions of the factory pro kit.. I have one here that is just the spring and the newer kit contains a spring and the arm with bearing?
...can you get just the bearing arm seperate?

not sure, from what I can see, this kit has the arm, spring, and clutch cover gasket

I bought the kit from Randy and its the Factory one. It contains the spring, the arm and the gasket. You need a couple of parts more in order to install the kit (full details at my web, engine section)
The first impression when installed its not too good: very hard shift. After doing 10.000 kms in august the shift works softer and the gain in more precise movement, better engaged gears and less movement are worth the spent, more in time fitting it than the purchase

that's very strange mine was great from the start took bugga all to install it and was precise with an easy shift.
I´ve installed 3 of them and the first 2.000 kms is always the same : hard shift at the lever, more when cold and in traffic. But in open road and at normal temp yes, it is precise, great with excellent feedback and worth the effort to fit it. Even now, with more than 12.000 kms since fitted the shift is harder than OE when cold, but only a bit
My friend Mingo is thinking about to fit only the arm and leave the OE softer spring. Does anyone try it?
I think the stronger spring SUCKS. The roller arm, however, is probably worth installing.
I installed the Factory Pro SPRING kit in my '85 and could not tell a bit of difference. I think Yamaha installed strong springs in the early models then switched to a weaker spring in later years. If you install the FP spring in an '85, I don't think you will notice any difference.
My '92 has the weaker spring and I absolutely LOVE the way it shifts compared to the '85. The "shift kit" I bought for the '93 has sat on my pegboard for 12 years. The only reason I continue to keep it is there is a cltuch cover gasket in the package.

IIRC, you have to pull the complete clutch ass'y out to get to the spring/lever.... Not too bad.

The shift spring has nothing to do with gear engagement, it's just there to ratchet the lever back after a shift. If you got the full shift kit (bearing detent and spring), then that may be an improvement. My point was simply adding the FP spring to an early model did not accomplish anything in my case. And in the 15 years I rode it with the stock spring, the feel never changed. In the 12 years I've had the FP spring in it, it's continued to feel the same.
I have the ability to ride the two different models back to back and I, by far, prefer the feel and ease of the '93 shift lever. I don't recall ever missing a shift on my '93. Maybe my foot is just more sensitive to shifting?
