What does the chin fairing do? I have been riding all summer without it, but am planning on a 3000 mi. trip to N. Wisc. and wondering if I should put it back on. It was off for removal of pipes and oil change, etc. all which are all done now.
May direct some air , but I think its mostly for looks, and imo they look better on :good2:
a few weeks back I was tooooooo lazy to put mine back on afer an oil change, I just wanted to go for a ride, as it was a particularly cold day I noticed that my boots were colder than usual.
To be honest I was surprised on just how wind it deflects from around your feet.
It redirects any oil leaks further back than they actually are. It also catches brake fluid when the clutch slave leaks and after you fix the peeled paint you find the chin faring ABS plastic has been under a chemical attack and is cracking. Then it makes you think about if it really does anything and if you should fix/replace it.......
My chin fairing came broken, ugly, flat black, and coated with oil and tar. After eight years I realized I was never going to fix it and threw it out. I thought of buying one off Ebay and painting it, but I like the bike without it.

I think the FJ looks good with or without the chin faring. FJ's are just good looking. :good2:

I purchased my 89 without the cowling. I decided I wanted one and found out how difficult finding a used was. Finally found one and IMO the cowling makes the bike look better. My preference would be to find a Silky white Lockhart 3/4 cowling that was sold for the 1100's. I know finding one that is not beat up will be next to impossible.

Same here. I went through a lot of pain (and money) to get mine on. I also think it looks a lot better... sportier.
