Title: front sprocket side to side movement
Post by: bigbore2 on September 04, 2012, 05:43:42 PM
84 1100--Putting on a new chain and sprockets and noticed that when i tightened the front sprocket nut down [61 lbs. torque] the splined washer lock tab and sprocket [18T] are loose a little.  The nut just tightens down on the shaft and not against the lock tab and sprocket??   Put a little grease on the tranny shaft splines??

Have you compared the thickness of the sprocket to the one you are replacing?.... sounds like its too narrow. I f you have to add spacers, make sure you add the same amount on both sides to maintain proper alignment.

I agree with Harvy. Something is not right, time to investigate. Hope this helps.

Tighten till it strips, back off half a turn and bend the tabs on the locking washer...  :shok:

Damn! I need someone to catch my chain and sprocket when it flys off. I will be way too busy keeping my Power Ranger suit clean to bother with lost drive train parts....

Make sure you put the recessed portion of the nut towed the sprocket, if not the nut seats on output shaft and will leave the sprocket & lock ring loose.

Randy- I think that is what is wrong as I am pretty sure it is on the other way.  I should have thought of that myself but saved by the brain trust.  Thanx

The last front sprocket I got was not handed, The same if installed either way. Good to know when I need a new one. Check for proper orientation and tightness, might be good advice in brothels and blind dates as well.

NO just what I though. Good to read that you had a good ride over the weekend. Sorry your FJ had a bad day. Did you figure out what was going on?

Yes, I think my FJ is in withdrawal as it has not had an upgrade since the last WCR. Road hard and put away wet with no love in between.... Might go for the 4 brush starter upgrade and or something hotter for the ignition.... An Li battery to give more time to crank between stalls....
