Title: need help with wiring!! 91 fj12 turbo!
Post by: backstreetheros on August 20, 2012, 04:33:49 PM
Right... Where do we start.
Bought a fj, came with wiring loom but just the wires. :dash2:
What exactly do I need to make this run?
I understand I need an Ignitor box.
What else do I need??
I have two coils, a pickup for the timing and a pile of wire!
I know I will have to bridge the kickstand sensor and the clutch sensor but i dont know which plugs these are on the loom.
As I'm using nothing else fj its like running it on a bench.
Pictures or links will be of great help and ill post up a video when i get it running!
The bike will have a daylight mot. So no lights or indicators or any other electrical crap.

Please help fj gods!

Dude you need to throw that harness away...............you only need the

1) pick up to go to the Ignitor,............ two wires
2) power to the coils and Ignitor............ One wire (+12v)
3) ground for Ignitor..........one wire
4) ground for coils (from coils to the Ignitor box)..............two wires
5) two wires from booster to Ignitor
6) power +12 volt for booster
If you want to get fancy you can hook up the 2 alternator wires

I see the title says 91 now, so I had to add wires for your boost......or what ever you want to call it

What is boost??
So I only need
Pickup,
Coils
Ignitor
And this boost thing? Can you explain that?
Do you have a link for a wiring diagram for the above?
Really appreciate the help!

Boost sensor is a vacuum sensor for the ignition advance....

anyone got a picture of this boost sensor?
i dont think i have one and i dont think i will be able to use one as will be positive carb pressure with turbo instead of negative?
will the bike run without it?
and could i just not link it to the intake of my turbo instead of carb intake?? surely it would be too much for it?

I would just look around for an aftermarket ignition as you are going to be wanting some programmable curves to keep the engine happy with boost applied.  I used to have a dyna2000 on an older bike that would allow you to program in advance curves by hooking it to a computer using some software that came with it.  You are definitely not going to want to run an engine on boost without changing the ignition curve to add in some protection for higher boost levels.

I have a GSX-R750 that has programmable curves via a Yoshimura EMS - it was made by Dynajet specifically for Yoshimura.  It has a mode that allows you to switch between various maps via a button.  I never bought the button, but it may be useful with a turbo.  You may be able to find one of these that someone wants to get rid of cheap.  I have seen them on eBay for not much money -like $50, from time to time.  Considering they sold new for more than 10 times that, it seems cheap to me, anyway.

I agree with them guys........you probably do want to go with an aftermarket ignition...........no vacuum switch to worry about

An aftermarket unit that allows you to cut timing as boost comes in would be terribly useful.

as to your question of what a boost sensor looks like here are a couple of pictures of one installed on my bike.

basically it's a map sensor to determine the load of the engine.  Mine connects via hose to the leftmost cylinder.

The Dyna 2000 offers ignition curves that do exactly that.  The newer units are also programmable so you can build and load your own curve.
