So I log on to find out what the deal is and see that: 1. T.P. KOA is gone for good  2. FJ gang scattered all over for 2012 ecfr

This day just went right down the crapper.  Man, no more KOA..  Hard to believe.

Ok ya'll I'm going to run this up the flagpole and see who salutes.

Lori Hunt at Hunt's Lodge has offered to cook dinner for us on Saturday night (for a fee) so that we may all get together for a meal. She does this for the SabMag group and I can attest to how good it is! I can make a dessert of some sort, maybe even get ice cream for Henry.

Here's the choices.....
So far, we have worked up two different possibilities for semi-catered meals at the campground. In either case, we will provide the plates, silverware, napkins, salt/pepper, and condiments. Your peeps would want to bring their favorite beverages. All meals are served buffet style and I tend to make more food than is really needed, but nobody goes away hungry.

The menu selections are (so far):
1.   Pulled pork bb-q dinner with two sides, Sweet Baby Ray's bb-q sauce, buns, and cole slaw provided. The cost for that will be about $12.00 a head, and the pork comes from a place up the road that I have used a couple times now for Maggot gatherings. His pork is fall-off-the-bone delicious! No one will need to man the grill for this one.
2.   Choice of marinated grilled ribeye steaks or two chicken breasts with two sides, dinner rolls, and salad. The cost for this is a little higher at $18.00. I would need to know how many wanted steak and how many wanted chicken breasts. The steaks are approximately 9oz cuts, and the chicken are good sized, too. I would also need to know if boneless or bone-in chicken was wanted. You would need to find a member of the group who wants to show off their grilling skills for the meat.
The sides currently available:
Baked potato - regular or loaded twice baked
Baked sweet potato
Potato salad
Green beans
Baked beans
Corn casserole
Hashbrown casserole
Corn on the cob
Salad
Cornbread salad
Ramen salad
Cole slaw
Deviled eggs (2 per person)

So let me know if you are interested. If not, let me know that too. I'll need some sort of head count about 2wks out from the rally.

Title: I've hit a snag
Post by: ddlewis on August 28, 2012, 08:40:03 AM
Nancy I don't really care which dinner.. Like I said, if it happens, I'm in for either.  If I had to pick I'd go pork bbq.

The snag:  My wife just had an accident with her car yesterday..  The car that I was going to pull my bike down with.  It's not legally driveable as is and unlikely to be repaired and ready by ecfr time.

I have two other cars, a civic and a mazda miata.  Neither being great tow vehicles.  My trailer is tiny and the bike is light so it could still work.  The miata oddly enough has the bigger motor (1.8 v 1.7  ) but the short wheel base might be funky pulling a trailer.  They do sell class I hitches for both and there's plenty of time to get one on.  Bike weighs 350, trailer weighs 150.  Anything could pull 500#.. right?

Or I could just ride.  500 miles one way.  Long haul on the thumper for a short weekend, but doable.

Glad your wife wasn't hurt.  The rest is just money, and like my Nana used to say, "You're young, you'll make some more."

Quote from: ddlewis on August 28, 2012, 08:40:03 AMAnything could pull 500#.. right?
You can do it easily with a Miata.

I've done a lot of miles towing with a Miata - a 1.6 liter car, burdened with taller gearing from a 1.8 diff, burdened more with cams that are weaker <4,500 rpm than a kitten with asthma.  I've had no problems towing a 14' O'Day Javelin on a trailer, or a 4x8 utility trailer with two dirtbikes on it.  The constraint for me was not wanting to spin my trailers' little 8" tires much faster than about 65 mph.

Thanks Bill.  Yes thankfully it was minor with no serious injuries.  Car is out of commission for a few weeks.  There's a chance I could get it back in time, provided they are going to fix it -which I still haven't heard for sure on.

Been reading up and see it's not unheard of at all to tow light loads w mx5.  In fact it's looking like the better choice over the civic given the extra hp and rwd.  Several hitch options available for it which surprised me.

I installed one on my Jetta before I sold it.  I towed my trailer and dirt bike no problem with that car.

I've got a hitch assembly for early NA Miatas, and no more Miata to bolt it to. Danny, its yours if you want it, although logistics at this point in the game might make that a bit tough to make happen.

I called the lumber yard on 165 yesterday in Tellico and asked for them to hold off burning their scrap lumber. I told them that even though the KOA was not ever going to open again didn't mean that our motorcycle group would not still come to TP. So that being said, we have until Tuesday morning to get lumber. I guess that means Jeff and Jack will be going to get wood for the bonfire.

Once again, I'm grateful to all of you who are getting the rain out of the way for me.

I will be arriving Thursday evening at Hunt's with a coworker, Dave, who has a GTS1000 loaded into the back of an old Nissan pickup truck.  (The pickup is getting dropped off in north Georgia at his mom's Sunday night, and he's riding the GTS back to the office in Birmingham on Monday.)  I'm excited to be taking a decent ride with Dave, because so far it has all been "out for dinner after work" or "out for a ride during lunch."

I am also excited because I plan to ride out east on Friday, past Asheville, to meet up with Andrew.  Assuming he leaves Raleigh not long after classes end at 3:20, he'll get to the Waffle House in Marion NC not long after 6:30,  He'll be riding west to meet up with us aboard the '98 EX500 he just bought.  From the photos, it looks way too clean for the money he paid.  Also, he scored a great deal on a Craigslist AGV helmet and an actual Aerostich that fits him.  (He's a pair of boots away from being ready for track days.  Well, a pair of boots and a pair of tires.)  I'm even more psyched for this rally than for most of them.

Can't wait to see you all.

I'll be down sometime Thursday afternoon  My dyna ignition on Brutus has gone kaput on me.... thought it was the coils... replaced them and the plug wires.... runs great until it gets up to temp then starts missing  dammit that ignition has only been on the bike for 12 years!

Hey Frank, just out of interest, where do you have the ignition module mounted/sitting?
Mine is in the tail section beside the tool roll stuffed into a stubby cooler and stays good and cool.

Hey Harvy,

I have it mounted in the stock ignitor location under the left side panel.  I even ran relays so my coils could have direct power.... still no joy..... looks like i'm in the market for a new ignition.

Hey Frank,
You might want to try something other than Dynacrap for your next ignition.  Just last week they confirmed that my ignition unit was bad.  I've been chasing this intermittent loss of 2 cylinders gremlin for almost 2 years.  Took a chance on sending the unit back to Dynacrap for testing and they said it was bad.

Then, they offered to "let" me purchase a "new" unit (I assume it's a repaired item) from them "for their cost."  For $123, this is their absolute last chance.  If I get another failure, it's all getting replaced with some cheap shit off the internet.  :-)

The ignition unit was installed 6 years ago, but I only managed less than 6kmiles on it in those years.  Hardly any miles in the last 2 years since it's been acting up.

If I was coming to the rally, I could bring you my spare unit.  :-(

David,

I wish i still had my stock ignition and pickup to put on the bike.... unfortunately i loaned both of them out years ago to someone who was troubleshooting their ignition and i never got them back. wasnt such a big deal as my dyna was still working great.

my original Dyna lasted 12 years... i hate to hear their quality is not what it once was.

I wish you were coming to the rally too brother.... we've missed you for years and i believe jeffman is actually bringing a real live woman with him (girlfriend?) so this one should be good!

Next year's fall rally for sure.  Even if I have to fly and mooch a bike off of Jeff.
