Title: stuck in neutral
Post by: TjTom on July 20, 2012, 03:07:54 PM
I took my bike out for it's first run. Came to a traffic light, can't shift it into gear. Stuck in neutral!! Please help....

I have problems when in neutral getting into first when stopping at lights too.  I have to go to second gear and then repeatedly push down on the changer to get back to first.  It's a noisy performance.  Most time I just ride the clutch and pull away in second.  I would love to know how to fix it.  It's not the " jump out of gear" issue.

Sequential transmissions can't be shifted when they're not slightly moving.

In both cases, let the bike roll back or forward a bit and the gears should be easily selected.  If the bike is super hard to get into or out of a given gear, there's a chance that the shift forks have been bent, but that'd be fairly unusual.

TjTom have you tried this with the bike running and stopped? My thought was if there is a problem with the clutch that it would keep from going it to gear when running but it should go in when engine is stopped. Hope this helps?  :unknown: :unknown:

I had a similar problem with my '92 and lived with it for a couple seasons before I finally got to the root of the problem. It turned out to be the spring on the shifter-shaft that was causing all of the woes.We pulled the engine out in Feb '11 and brought it to an engine / race shop where they found the problem. That being said, I believe you can get at the shifter shaft without actually pulling the engine. The fix is simple and it has been shifting great ever since we replaced the shifter-shaft assembly.

If you look closely you will see the small spring at the bottom - that's the problem,

Could be a leaking slave cylinder.

Thanks for all the feed back. Zwartie I think that is my problem, I will change that spring and see if it helps. I replaced Clutch slave cylinder( it was leaking ) I went for a ride yesterday, still a little sticky at traffic lights. Got stuck it a thunderstorm  :cray: The headlight stop working, checked the fuzes, all good, started the bike and it came back. (weird) :wacko1:

The headlight stop working, checked the fuzes, all good, started the bike and it came back.

That is the symptom of a sticking starter button.
