Racers don't count laps.... They get a WHITE flag at the start of the last lap, they also have pitboards that tell them what lap they're on....This guy saw the white and mistook it for checkered, most likely. Rookie mistake, hopefully he learned a lesson.... :flag_of_truce:
I remember a race not too long ago that Rossi missed his pit board and thought he'd won. He did realize his mistake in time to put his head down and stay in front for the rest of the (real) final lap, but it was close.
