I just picked up an 84 FJ the day before yesterday. It has 62,000 miles, but runs like a top. Just put on about 400 miles since yesterday morning!. I've been riding for over 20 years (actually longer if you include the mini bike my father got me when I was 9) and have had 11 bikes. I sold my last motorcycle when I moved back here from New Zealand a few years ago and was contemplating buying something new but I don't want the payment right now, as I'm getting married in a few months. So a nice, inexpensive old bike is right up my alley. I intend on getting givi top and side cases (and the corresponding adapter from the UK FJ club), heated grips and a taller wind screen. This weekend I'm upgrading the headlight wiring (with relay) and I guess I'm going to be working on the speedometer, as it stopped working this morning. I think its the cable, given how abruptly it stopped. Its a cheap part to replace, so I'll give it a shot. Welcome. Sixty thousand miles is not bad you should still have lot of miles in that bike. When I first started searching for the parts my local dealer said he could get everything I needed and that was 2 years ago. A lot of finding what you are after will depend on who you talk with.

Cheers for the welcome guys! I just figured out what happened with the speedometer; The cable was loose. (on the speedometer end) So loose, in fact, it fell off when I checked the speedometer cable! Here's a quick question. What are you guys using to clean off the gunk on your bikes? The fairing and body are clean and in good shape, but there is more than a bit of road grime and brake dust on the lower mechanicals (pics to follow). Also, Higbonzo, what was that link again? when I try to use it it comes up with an error. Cheers for the help!

Fixed it....
I use WD40 to get oil and such off the wheels and chain. Just spray it on and wipe off with a rag. You may have to go over it a few times if the surface is really dirty. You can use the WD40 on the plastics to get all the oil that fly off the chain as well, spray it on a rag and wipe away. Then I wash over everything with a small amount of dawn and water. If you think you have over done the WD on the brake use some brake cleaner on the brakes after you have cleaned the bike, this removes any residue that may remain, you can also use Carb cleaner if you have no brake cleaner at the time. I spin the tires and spray near the brake pad on both sides of the discs. I use turtle wax/McGuire's fine scratch cleaners to really bring back the shine, and then go over it with wax. I use the scratch remover about once a year. And here is a good trick I have been doing for over 20 years, I use a leave blower, with a reducer on the end, to blow dry my bike. It works great and leave you bike spot free. I do it on my cars too.
