havn't posted for a while, in fact havn't ridden much at all lately what with work and uni but now getting a bit more active on the FJ
I was after any comment or feed back on the use of Motul 7100 20W50 Engine Oil (100% synthetic ) in the FJ anybody tried it ? I have always used Motul 1000 mineral 20/50 but want to move to a synthetic.
any thoughts or comments most welcome.

I used it for a while then considered it an unnecessary expense.
Mostly though it brought on clutch slipping on both my bikes. Within a few thousand K's of running on mineral again the clutches are fine.

Great ta hear from ya Dave. Yeah, clutch slippage with 20/50. But pretty well zero slippage with 20/40. -- I think thats why they often put 20/50 on special - to get rid of them. Doug

so what if any fully synthetic oils are people using successfully in the FJ's
I am currently using Mobil-1 Racing 4T, 10w40 synthetic.
I have used it for the last 4 oil changes(mainly because it went on sale, and I stocked up on a whole bunch)
No issues whatsoever in my FJ
I have tried synthetic in bike and cars and dont like it. I think it breaks down too fast, and dirtys quicker could be the mileage not sure.
I've had good results with Redline synthetic. What I notice is that it does not burn off as quick as Dino oil.
In hot weather riding, on long trips this is a good feature. No problems with any clutch slippage.
When I get 5k miles on my new engine in my '84 I will make the switch over to Redline.

I know my clutch slipping on synthetic is a borderline clutch and wouldn't happen were it in better condition, although it has stopped slipping now I've changed back, but I couldn't really see the value in it. I assume it's expensive over there as well. I was paying $90 for 4 litres.
How you treat your engine cold, the frequency and length of your rides and the temperature it runs at is going to have a much bigger impact on engine longevity than oil choice.
One of my customers cars has done 900,000 k's on the original 4 cyl motor and I know he's never specified an oil for it when it's serviced so it gets whatever crap they buy in bulk, and it's in great shape.
He has however religiously changed it at the specified intervals all it's life. He's had it from new in 1978.
I have no beef with synthetic oil I just can't see the value in it.

Yep, I also agree. How you treat your cold engine is key. It takes longer for the oil to come up to proper working temperature than many folks realize. Start the engine, choke on, warm up until the choke comes off, then you're good to go into the kookaloo zone.......right?

I just cringe when I see some stupid squid fire up a stone cold engine then proceed to bang it into the rev limiter. OUCH! Not sure who has a lesser life expentancy, the squid or the engine.
My general rule is to keep the revs under 3K for at least 5 miles, or longer if it's winter.

I usually keeps the revs under 1K for about six months in the winter.
I made the switch to AmsOil 10-40 with AmsOil spin-On filter, had some clutch slip and sticking disks from the Dino conflict but I keep it in and the slip and stick went away. Guessing the frictions need some time to leach out the Dino stuff.... I guess I need to get to the 15K mile mark and see how it goes... The judge is out till then...
