Title: bought 86 FJ with 10486 miles for $600
Post by: giantkiller on June 09, 2012, 11:10:36 AM
Been in storage for 10 years. Everything that has to do with brake fluid is leaking... So starts the changes. 2007 GSXR1000 front end, 92 GSXR750 rear wheel, manual petcock, Electrically adjusted stearing damper, lithium battery,(RPM parts, voltage regulater, clutch slave cylinder, integrated turn taillight, carb kit) GIVI rack and bags, trailtech voyager for speedo, red ss braided brake and clutch lines. I think I have all of  the parts together. The fork extensions are being reworked(too thick hitting in a couple of spots). Last thing I have to make is the risers to match the fj handle bars to be welded to GSXR clippons. Oh yah and mount for voyager. I figure it will be atleast 40 lbs lighter(without GIVI).I'm hoping to have it running in a couple of weeks (so it'll probably be a couple of months) Wish me luck

Yah it's a trail gps and it also reads off a magnetic speed pickup. Plus its got engine temp, tach and all kinds of other things it does. I'm useing one unit for my atv's, a mini chopper, and the FJ. You can get the sending unis from them for each machine.

Trailtech voyager It's fairly new. New to me too. Haven't used the gps for trails yet. Is not for street. Hope they develop software for street use someday. But for now it's a great speedo and moniter for engine

Trailtech allows me to justify the cost. Since I'm going to use it 1 for 4 different machines. I've wanted one for my 700 raptor since they came out. For trail gps. And I realized I can use it for speedo and engine monitoring on other machines

Got GSXR wheels back from powder coating. I put the bearings in them (I'll probably be replacing the rear again I got them Little too tight) mounted and balanced the tires last night. Made the steering stop, and bracket for the electric adjusted steering damper, tacked them up. Damper fits almost perfect under fairing. Put the toggle switch for it where rocker switch for reserve used to be. Painted the Gsxr front fender to match FJ red.

I work 12hr shifts mostly 7 days. A day off here and there(to pay for all these mods) So I do 1 thing every night. Did the flapectomy last night, just to get it outa the way. Got the 93 Gsxr750 brake side spacer today and fitted it up to see if it was right, it was. 92 thimble looking one was too thick. And now I'm going to need 15/32" total spacer to equal Fj wheel. 93 gsxr750 has straight spokes instead of slash spokes.(needed straight spokes to better mach 2007 Gsxr1000 front wheel) Found out the 93 Gsxr750 uses different brake set up than the rest. Its set a little more to the inside. so overall width is little narrower.

Please post your experience with the Honda rear shock on the 86.  I am thinking of that mod but didn't know how it would work on a rear suspension without dogbones.

So far all the f4i shocks that I have seen are going on 84,85s(no dog bones ) But I measured my 86 shock. And its the same as the posted length for the 84-5 shocks. So should be exactly the same .

I moved the tab for rear brake torque arm from the top to the bottom of the swing arm. And mounted fzr1000 arm to it . Mounted the honda shock and rezzi. Got gsxr rear wheel mounted. Made rizers(with jigsaw and a belt sander) to match fj handle bars on the gsxr clippons and just got them back from welder. Stuck them on just to check them out. Got to make sure every thing is right be fore I round them out and make them purty.I have pictures in the gallery. I can't figure out how to post them here. Or how to rotate them for that matter. Should be just a matter of assembly now.

Dude
I want to hear more about the front end change. I have considered modifying my 86 and the only thing I really think I want to change is the front end. I have to guess that your fitting Suzuki brakes to the front. I like my 86 stock like it is feels good handles well, I just figure the Suzuki front end and brakes form 07 would make it and even better machine than it is now.

I used the gsxr1000 front end because my buddy who races said they  are over sprung. Some of the racers put softer springs in them. So Im thinking that they should be good the way they are for the fj. The brakes (masters calipers and antidive and forks)were all leaking. So instead of fixing all that I decided to just put a complete gixxer front, better brakes, inverted, lighter and has a electrical adjusted steering damper.

I've been curious about the differenc in weight of the gsxr front and the stock fj components. I took the gsxr front off (complete with wheel, fender, triple, clippons I made and brake) and weighed it vrs. the fj components.

It's alittle biased in favor of fj be cause I couldn't find the rear section of the fender, the fj brake components are dry(no brake fluid) and the tire on the fj wheel is completely bald. And the tire on the gsxr wheel is new.

The difference was less than I thought the gsxr front was 9.8 lbs lighter. But its all unspung weight. Could be even greater than that for the unsprung. Because the majority of the USD forks weight is on the top (especially with my over engineered fork extensions could probably shave a pound off each extension)

Going to take it apart and powder coat the frame. This winter. I'm going to try and put a layer of black and red carbon Kevlar fabric over the chin fairing.
I was wondering if I should polish the swingarm and the other aluminium parts or just clean and leave them. Definitely going to polish the stainless exhaust. What does every one think polish or not on the aluminum?

I polished an 89 swing arm for my 91. (91+ were steel).
A few other pieces fell onto the buffing wheel , too.
