I am happy owner of '90 FJ1200 and just picked up project '93 with 1-3rd transmission problem. The big FJ bikes were my dream bikes when I started street riding used Seca 550 and Vision 550 back in '90. The '90 FJ1200 handles great, powers nicely, and easy to ride long distances without getting fatigued. I joined because I wanted to be part of a group that are enthused about keeping them running at or better than OEM.
Best regards and hope to find advice to the '93 transmission.
Welcome to the group Forest...
Our nearest member to you would probably be Mr Bean who is currently on the way to the Colorado rally.
Transmission problems are not usually associated with post '91 FJs, as they had better shift forks than the earlier models. If someone has miss-treated it however, you are probably looking at splitting the cases to repair it. Randy at RPMracing here on FJowners is your man for all FJ parts and mechanical advise - also headed for Colorado this week.
Have a good read here - plenty of FJ wisdom in the collective.
Cheers
Harvy
Welcome to the group!
Sounds like someone has abused that transmission at some point during it's life.
when you say 1-3 problem.... are you saying it also jumps out of first AND third gear as well as second gear?
depending on how abused you might be able to get by with just replacing the bent shift forks
KOokaloo!

Welcome, twice the Kookaloo eh? That is what I need, one to ride while while having the other to modify...
I have started to clean the '93 FJ1200 bike, it is ABS model in pretty decent condition. The previous owner let it sit under a canopy for about a year. I am very happy owner so far as it fired right up. I hope the issue with transmission is only bent forks. The bike needs new chain/sprockets.
Time spent cleaning the bike is 'feel good' therapy for me.
I will post pics once I figure it out.
:hi: welcome to the nut house a great place

Foresthill :yahoo: Welcome glad you are here. Every body is glad to help all they can. A second FJ I am jealous! Good luck with the new one. :bye2:
I have returned... Sold the '90 FJ1200 and restored the '93 to ride able condition few years back (6-7 years getting fixed). Last year i picked up a '86 FJ1200 in pretty sad shape. It is another project but the restoration for it is accelerated due to Covid-19 stay at home order. Complete rear end tear down is needed as the rear suspension seems to not move. Engine fires up and gear selection is good. Just mounted fresh Bridgestone BT-45's high performance V tires. Working on bikes is therapy for me.
Welcome again!
Welcome back to the fold :hi:
