Title: fork seals
Post by: Tapartacus on May 22, 2012, 12:45:18 PM
Hi I'm going to have the forks of my 92 fj serviced. I was told I should get "slide bushes" along with the seals. Randy is this something you carry at RPM? Can someone explain what they are?

Thanks
Andrew

There is a picture of them and where they go in the write up at the bottom of this thread.  It's about 1/2 way through the write up.http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=1911.0 (http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=1911.0)

They act as the wear points where your fork tubes slide into the bottom of your forks(fork sliders).  One is in the bottom slider, the other on the fork tube.  Easy to change if you've got the forks apart to do the seals.  It's said that the fork seals are prone to leak when replaced without replacing the bushings.

Randy's got them, I'm quite sure.

Thanks Mark, great detailed report! Nothing I'd ever want to attempt though. Did a search on RPM doesn't look like Randy carries then. Will call my local Yamaha dealer.
Thanks again
Andrew

Andrew,

I would be interested in the search term you used to look for the fork parts. I do have the
FJ rebuild kit (http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=M%2FC%3AFJ41ForkR%2FBKit) in stock.

I searched fork seal and it came right up with all of the other parts related to the front forks.

Let me know the search term you used and I will add it to the search vocabulary so other who might use that term(s) will be able to find them.

Randy - RPM

Randy, this should help... I know you are a little tired with the plumbing issue.... Happy to help.

You dont have to get them, but why buy one part and then in a little while have it leak again? Peace of mind it is.

But yes, Randy does carry them (as seen) - good price too.

The job is quite simple, just make sure you have a good tool set. I managed to do it

Hi Randy I searched slide bushings. Probably a bit too vague?

BTW I did find the fj rebuild kit but didn't know it included the slide bushes. So I will order up from RPM directly.
Cheers

There are 2 kits. the one just has the seals

the other has both the seals and the slide bushings

if you're confused, the kit should be $82.99. The seals kit is 40 odd.

btw - if you dont have a seal mate or other fork sealing agent, you can use a section of pipe - works well enough.
