Title: Sleeping Beauty and Rusty
Post by: WhiteBeard on May 03, 2012, 04:13:42 PM
Just woke the damsel up from her winter sleep and took her for a spin, felt great!   :good2:

However... much to my consternation I found a large amount of rust spots on the top and lower frame, brake discs, fasteners, wheel rims etc.
The bike was kept in an uninsulated storage, with a motorcycle cover. We live quite close to the sea, so the climate here is humid and salty (I suppose).

How would you go about removing these new rust spots off of the frame and other precious spots? I want to do it as gently as can be, no strong chemicals if it can be avoided...

Thanks!
/Nat

I'd start by spraying it down with some penetrating oil and let it soak in.
They gently wash it off with hot, soapy water and dry very well.
Then polish any bare metal and wax anything painted.

Naval jelly red for rust removal on steel, Naval jelly blue for oxidation removal on aluminum. Will not hurt the paint.

You need to move.....

Couldn't find the naval jelly in the store, but I did find this:

It contains phosphoric acid, alcohol and water, so it seems to be similar to the naval jelly.

I hope that it will do the trick together with some WD-40 and a toothbrush...
