Hey, I am putting on a new front sprocket and was wondering if I can pull out the clutch rod [the rod that sticks out just in front of the front sprocket] and then return it or will I never be able to get back to proper depth once removed and need to clean it in its current position.
No problem, you can pull the rod out and replace it just fine.
Do not start your engine with the clutch slave cylinder removed
The rod will squirt out like a cross bow bolt, and you will lose copious amounts of oil.

I can fess up and say that the number of warnings and reports on this site have saved the life of my neighbor's cat at least once. Can't have too many warnings or disaster reports to really help the message stick in the mind. This does not mean that I won't forget and shoot the rod into a door panel at some time in the future...
I have done it but mine didn't shoot out too fast -- I think I only just gave the starter a quick tap because I saw slowly push out and then stopped it. NO shooting out killing the passers by or anything..... and no clutch ball loss either. Lesson learned and never again.
I guess I was not in a position to make that mistake, as my carbs were off bike at the time. However I know how sometimes it just is necessary to start it up and listen to it idle while working on a project. Thanx for the fessin' up.
